There are rules to betting smart. But other than that, you don't know. I mean the Hawks have beaten the Spurs when they were 8pt underdogs. I could have had 1.85 to 1 on that bet! Look at the matchups, the style of play, the last 10 games. Have they played 4 in 5, did they just get embarrassed? Did they just leave a party city? Do their players like to party? It may not make a difference for the Superstars because they are used to not having much time to rest due to a hectic schedule to begin with, but the roleplayers cover the spread. You have to know those things and bet with your gut. Know that one team is "due" and you'll have a good season! Last season I won $5000+ by just betting on the Pacific Division. I only bet on what I know, don't pretend that you know ALL of the league if you don't.

Re: Possible to construct an algorithm to predict 55%+ NBA games?
My method has a touch over a 57% win rate over the past 6 1/2 seasons, and I have yet to have a losing year. The main problem with my way is I have no way of automating it, so there's a lot of manual data entry and Excel work just to determine whether or not a game is a play.

Just like IceMan said, you have to really study some teams. You don't need to bet on every game out there.
Anyway let me give you a story. I was addicted to NBA odds for a while (I had issues with my book who was rather moody) and Phoenix and Lakers put a lot of money to my pocket. I was able to determine that L.A. wouldn't give up that many points in the regular season except for Boston so I made a lot of money betting on them as underdogs. The Portland streak too made a lot of bettors happy and of course we won't forget the COVERING spree of New Orleans coming into the playoffs. Boy oh boy it was like 8 games straight they covered!
You gotta study some teams, probably start with your favorites. My first ever bet was for 500, Spurs vs. Portland. Home court of Spurs so they were minus 14 favorites and they ended up winning 16 I think. Won't forget that.
