Defensive Composite Stats

Pretty interesting (no defensive stat is that great but this at least seems to have high correlations with players considering to be good defensive players):

It does. But Rasheed and Webber having similar scores on the same team is a bit of a concern. As is Rafer Alston's rating of 92.

Re: Defensive Composite Stats

Well, it uses Dean Oliver's DRtg, which is a stat I've never really seen explained. It always seems like it depends really heavily on a player's teammates and the system he plays in.

e.g. in 2003-04, Mike James played 55 games for Boston with a DRtg of 106, 3 points worse than the league average. Then he was traded to Detroit and his DRtg dropped 10 points to 96 (7 better than the league average) for the next 26 games. Don't know if Mike James really improved his defense that much, or he just got put on a better defensive team.

When there's a disclaimer right below saying this statistic isn't perfect and has big flaws for certain areas, I can't take it seriously.

Every derived statistic should have this same disclaimer.

It lends credibility to the author, IMO.

Re: Defensive Composite Stats

Frankly, it makes it look more 'scientific' if it's not on a 0-100 scale.

When your surrounded by better defensive players, they make you a better defensive player, thats all I see from this.

But yea Im not too enthralled by this stat but I like the guy who created it, seems very eager to learn and never stops looking for ways to improve upon it.

Re: Defensive Composite Stats

This is entirely subjective, but Larry Brown would unleash Hunter and James and those two would suffocate opposing backcourts. I don't really know about James' defense before Detroit, and I don't know how much is based off some kind of ripple effect of the Wallaces and a generally great defense. Also, it's not easy to say whether Hunter deserved more credit than James or vice versa, but in general, that tandem was very effective defensively.

Re: Defensive Composite Stats

i think in defensive stats you should take away steals and blocks as they sometime happen so rarely in the game
