Summer League
Nets to play in Orlando summer league
Quote:
Following five days of training at the Magic's RDV Sportsplex, the Nets will play a five-game schedule against Boston, Cleveland, Miami, Orlando, and Washington, starting on July 6.
Current Nets Brian Scalabrine and Zoran Planinic will lead the summer roster of 16 players, which includes former NBA veterans Damone Brown, Sam Clancy, Alvin Jones, Donny Marshall, and Jeff Trepagnier.
Desmond Penigar, the NBDL Rookie of the Year, will play for the Nets.

Alvin Jones
Damone Brown
Sam Clancy
Donny Marshall
Jeff Trepagnier
Desmond Penigar
That's only 8 of the 16. I'm sure not all of the 16 slots are filled yet. Stay tuned...

More on Penigar:
Asheville’s Desmond Penigar Named Rookie of the Year
Quote:
Noted for his tireless work habits, Penigar is tied with Charleston guard Tierre Brown for the league lead in scoring with 18.6 points per game. The Utah State product has played in 34 games for Asheville (29 starts) and is averaging 29.2 minutes, 6.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.4 steals per game.
...
The 6-5, 245-pound Utah State product recorded his best month in December, averaging 22.8 points and 8.3 rebounds on the way to being named NBDL Player of the Month. He has failed to score in double figures just four times all season and has scored 20 points or more 12 times.

Trepagnier, Clancy and Veal were teammates for all 3 years that Veal was at USC (he played at a JuCo for 1 year).
Veal: 98-99, 99-00, 00-01
Trepagnier: 97-98, 98-99, 99-00, 00-01
Clancy: 98-99, 99-00, 00-01, 01-02

Trepagnier is an interesting prospect. A top-notch athlete and good defender, but tweener-guard sized. He's been criticized for having a lot more athleticism than skills. A Freddie Jones type. If he's tightened his skill-set in his 3 years as a pro, he could help the Nets.

Strengths:Super athletic player owns a 40-inch vertical can jump out the gym ... Quick first step usually able to take his man off the dribble and finish with a acrobatic drive ... Has really become a much better jump shooter since he first stepped on the court as a freshman ... Excellent rebounder for a player at the shooting guard position ... Has very quick hands on defense able to anticipate most passes and plays the passing lanes well .... Moves without the ball and has started to become a better shooter of the screen and catch ....Wonderful work ethic has gotten better each year at USC ...Has excellent body control on his drives makes the hardest play look easy ... Can hit the spot up 3-point shot although by no means is he Steve Kerr...
Weakness: Most continue to become more consistent from the perimeter and with the 3-point shot .... Needs to work on his ball handling as he can get a little careless with the ball an commit a turnovers ... His size at the shooting guard position might hurt although this is doubtful considering his immense athleticism ... Needs to become a better shooter off the dribble from the perimeter ... Has a tendency when his jump-shot is falling to stop attacking the basket and settle for outside jumpers ... Had a off year for his senior season although this had nothing to do with his game but none the less the outside distractions with the NCAA took him a while to become refocused on basketball ...Could stand to become a better free throw shooter so he can take full advantage of his slashing ability

I wonder if having his college teammates aboard motivated Veal to play summer league again. At this point, his job is safe. How many 4th year players continue to play summer league?
In any case, Scalabrine is a good player to put on the floor to help the other players on the floor run the Nets system.

If Veal wants to earn more minutes playing the 3 or the 5, he needs more time in the summer league.
While Veal may not be as natural of an athelete as Rodney, with hard work he could become just as versitale.

I just remember him from a college dunk contest. Can he shoot? Don't need a 2 guard that can't shoot.

Only 2 players under 6'4"
Also, 4 centers on the roster
Donny will be 10 years older than some of his teammates
