Hmmm. I can't imaging that he can get $3.35 million on the open market. Could it have been a buy out or some other sort of incentive from the Nets?

Ratner must be going crazy for saving some more millions since Nets didn't have to pay anything to Rogers for getting bought out. This might be his most glorious moment as a Net, declining the option :-)

I guess this is why Rogers worked so hard to get in shape last off-season. Kind of hard to expect him to put in that kind of conditioning work 2 years in a row, so if he's going after what's likely his last big paycheck, now's the time to do it.
When Rogers was good last season, he was very good, so if his agent puts together a slick highlight package, maybe a team will actually take a chance on him. Maybe no one will remember how much Frank trusted him to play a critical role and how badly he bombed in that role during the post-season.

he simply couldn't move without the ball and that doesn't work on this team.

I agree with tom. He'll definitely help some team, but he doesn't quite fit with this one.

Sounds like Rodney's agent may have pulled an Anthony Carter by forgetting to make the call by midnight on the 30th. But maybe, he thinks he can get a multi-year deal now. I'm very curious to see where he ends up.

It makes more sense for Rogers to opt out now, though, compared to an Anthony Carter. He must know the Nets aren't going to resign him next season, he probably has an idea his role will be shrunk this season, and as inconsistently as he played in 03-04, it's hard to envision him raising his market value as a Net in 04-05, even if he somehow managed to stay in shape. I strongly suspect if Rogers did opt to play the final season on the contract, he'd become instant trade-bait anyway. If that's the case, Rogers probably prefers to have a say where he plays and take his chances on landing a multi-year deal.
I think Rogers will come out of this okay. The promise of Rodney Rogers is still enticing: coming from a winning team, an affable person who doesn't make waves; talent, skill, versatility to legitimately play across the front-line; rare combination of quickness, size, strength and even explosiveness. Again, that's the promise of Rogers, which he failed to live up to for the Nets. The Nets know better, but when other teams look down the list of reasonably priced free agents, Rogers' multidimensional scouting report will stand out. Someone will likely offer him a multi-year deal, maybe even in the 3 mil per year range again.
Scalabrine doesn't have Rogers' talent, but at least Veal gives a consistent effort every time out on both ends and does what he's supposed to do on the court. Veal will be made to look bad once in a while, especially rebounding, but when Rogers loses focus as he's wont to do, he can't even manage to look bad because he's 5 feet from and 3 seconds behind the play. And unlike Rogers, Veal showed something positive in the post-season. Don't forget, Veal is in his free agency season. He'll be motivated to set up his next contract, and the Nets will want to find out if he's worth keeping around a few more years.
