With his injury history, including last season? Yeah.
Without the needed improvements around the Big 3 and Kidd's injury, if the Nets took a step backwards in 04-05 that resulted in more losses, a lower play-off seed and/or an earlier, less competitive play-off exit, Martin's market value would have been knocked down. Like a Bill Russell, his stats don't say max player; his winner's reputation got him his contract from the Nugz.
Less Nets winning, which is probable for 04-05, less likelihood for a big free agent payday for K-Mart.
I understand that Kenyon is a strong part of this team, but come on! It is not like we are losing a caliber player such as Jason Kidd.
Face it, alot of Kenyon's easy buckets came off Nets fast breaks and amazing Kidd passes. I think that Kenyon will pan out in Denver and be an average player in the west.
I still cant believe that Denver is giving up so much in the future
(3 Picks) and all that money. There is no way Kenyon is worth that money. It boggles my mind.
Who is going to be able to distrubute the ball to martin in denver?
Andre Miller? Give me a break. He doesnt have a quarter of Kidd's ability.
Just breathe easy and let it go. Everything is going to be ok.
this makes no sense. you seem to justify the loss of kmart (who was great in NJ) by saying he wont do well in denver.
how the hell does that make the loss for the nets any better? do other teams give a crap about denver or new jersey? no...you cannot look at denvers situation when talking about NJ. it doesnt work that way. even if we paid him 1000000000 dollars, does that add even one win to the nets? nope.
besieds, dre can run and pass - hes gonna be in heaven with melo, nene and kmart running long side him!

Of course it matters. Because, instead of us overpaying for him, you guys did instead.

Sometimes you have to overpay, what will people say if the Kenyon Martin trade is the move that puts the Nuggets over the top? With Shaq out of the West, there's not that big obstacle anymore for teams.
Could people realistically say "Ah, at least we didn't overpay for him" in such a scenario?
Now if Camby can stay healthy, the Nuggets have one of the best big man rotations in the league, and that'll be huge come playoff time.

I think Denver signing KMart to the max is a good move, better than the Nets' decision of not matching the offer, which in itself is not that bad of a decision.
Denver has great financial ability over next few years. This is what big cap-space does to you: to overpay someone a little bit and still come out in great shape financially. I know Denver probably will not have that much cap room left in next few years but their rosters are already shaped. When and if they found out in later years this roster isn't as great as they thought, if that's the case they still will have some expiring contracts to work with.

No true.
Carmello will command a max deal by the time he is a FA and Martin will be on the books. Nene will command around the MLE, and Martin will be on the books then. Plus their other young players.
This was their last great cap spending signing.

You can't worry about another team's front court when you are trading for yourself. It was obvious we weren't going to overpay him, so at least we got 3 picks for him.

As a Philly sports fan, I'm used to situations similar to this happening to some of my favorite teams often. You can't worry about another team's front court, but you can worry about what a certain player could've done for your team if he remained.
I honestly think if the Nets retained Kenyon Martin, they would've had a good to great shot at the championship. I think what really makes this situation even more confusing is the fact that they sold their first rounder this year. Getting picks back for a core member of your team soon afterwards, just doesn't make sense.

I screamed it before and i will say it again, the nets should have moved up in thye draft and grabbed Telefair, and not just for Bball reasons...
I will give ratner the benefit of the doubt and he sold the pick to help retain Martin..I think that was their intention.Where they $##$ed up is the very second Tin Man Foyle got paid his 43 million,Thorn should have realised the landscape had drastically changed and ridiculous money was being thrown around. They should have locked up martin right then and there..
Face it, there is no positive in losing KMart unless one of those picks turns out great...But that's what 2 years + down the road...No more present..Only a question maRk future and now possibly could Kidd be on his way out? This was a huge mistake, keeping these 3 together till Kidd retires or until next year when it needed to be decided whether to give Jefferson big bucks or make another deal (maybe deal Kidd after one more run at the championship and get some expiring deals or what not), etc was a must IMO. Then you at least keep the young nucleus of KMART and RJEFF together.

The only way to save face in this situation is to somehow land Wilcox from LA.I would assume he is expendable as kaman is developing, and Brand is an all star...
Give them two first round draft picks and filler. They are supposed ly going to match for Q Rich,so they may be willing to move Wilcox before he becomes a free agent....
Ratner must realise that this was a collosal screw up.Thorn seriously underestimated the amount of money that teams would be willing to throw around.
Wilcox is the only answer
Otherwise wave goodbye to Kidd and RJ...I can not imagine that makes good business sense
