From what i heard on espn news, the nets are interested in signing ron mercer. i dont know why this would be a bad transaction. he would be a good fit in new jersey.
Gosh, I hope not, but Friday's Times seems to think so:
Quote:
Ron Mercer, who played 39 games for the Spurs last season, is a more likely candidate to fill Kittles's spot at shooting guard, and he could be acquired for a part of the midlevel exception.
...
Andy Miller, Mercer's agent, said: "Ron is considering four or five different situations, and New Jersey is right there at the top of the list. The role is the most critical thing for us."
Miller has close ties to Nets Coach Lawrence Frank, but he said the more crucial relationship is the one that Mercer and Frank have going back to when Frank recruited Mercer for the University of Tennessee, losing out to Kentucky.
"There is a comfort level," Miller said. "If Lawrence says this is the role I foresee for you if you do x, y and z, he knows that Lawrence will follow through and deliver. Ron has had a lot of homes over the last few years, so this can fall on deaf ears, but he knows that if Lawrence looks him in the face, whatever agreement they come to terms on will not change."
Additionally, the Nets are expected to announce the signings of forward Eric Williams (multi-years starting at $3.8 million) and guard Ron Mercer (two years for $3.6 million) early next week. The two free agents could be starters for the Nets next season.
The Nets had expected to announce the signing of Ron Mercer yesterday, but that event was pushed back to this morning because of delays with administering the free agent's physical.
Mercer isn't a bad player, but it's hard to imagine him being much of a factor, unless he adds something else to his game besides a mid-range jump shot.
The only image for Mercer in my mind should be traced to 01-02 or 02-03 season:
The 40+old Jordan move rapidly from the front to defense the poor Mercer as he was trying to get a close shot. The ball left Mercer's finger for quite a distance and Jordan jumped with a unbelievable velocity and altitude, picking the ball from above the basket.
What did Mercer fell that time?

Thanks to all members of this site, you guys are great.
I'm not really upset with this signing, but I'm not really that happy either. He can get us some points and maybe after being cut and out of the nba for a while, he'll come back with an attitude of trying to prove something and working harder then he had? I know its a long shot, but we can hope.
Mercer said he was contacted by five or six teams, but wanted to play for coach Lawrence Frank.
"He tried to recruit me while I was in high school,'' Mercer said. "He was a funny, good guy, just like he is now. He hasn't changed at all. He still looks the same. That's one guy that I trusted over the years.''
A talented swingman without the real passion for this sport. I read an article when Mercer and Derek Anderson just freshed out of college (both from Kentucky in same year). A scout said, despite the fact that Mercer was more accomplished in college and appeared to have more talent, Derek Anderson will be a better pro because Mercer lacks the desire to fulfill his potential. He got it right obviously.
Hopefully he learned after years of bouncing around.
