Nets and Blazers are talking Kidd for Abdur-Rahim

The New Jersey Nets are talking to the Portland Trail Blazers about a trade that would include sending Jason Kidd to the Blazers for forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim, SportsLine.com has learned.
Blazers president Steve Patterson confirmed Tuesday afternoon that discussions have gone on, although he made it clear that a deal has not been completed.
"It's early," Patterson said. "It's interesting, but I don't know if anything will happen."
Another source told SportsLine.com that the Blazers are busy getting opinions on the micro-fracture surgery that Kidd had on his left knee July 1 that figures to have him out until December. The surgery was successful, and Kidd has made it clear he would like to leave the Nets, who were sold to Bruce Ratner in the spring and have essentially purged their roster since then.

I would hope that the Nets would need to get Telfair back in order for this trade to happen. He can't be traded until December, but since Kidd probably can't play unitl December, that shouldn't hold things up.

I wouldn't mind this trade at all.
Who are we kidding...the Nets are not going any where this year, so whether Kidd is still on the team or not won't make a difference. For a player with his style, the surgery he had was huge. He depends on his legs to make plays and get his team going, so if this surgery turns out to be unsuccessful in the long run, we are stuck with another long term wasted of a contract.
SAR's contract expires after this season freeing up more space for us next year or the year after. Not that I think Ratner would spend next offseason, but have you guys seen the quality FAs next year? There are a ton out there.
If Telfair is thrown in, then I would do it without question. Even though I'm not as sold on him as others seem to be.

When the offseason opened up, I called all variants of this deal insane. Now though, I think it's pretty darn decent for the Nets. I agree that Portland should probably throw in a piece of young talent (Telfair makes the most sense), but as a base this makes some sense.

Don't underestimate the competitive fire that Kidd possesses, other than his unparalled skills. I am pretty sure if Kidd is (and that is a big IF) anywhere close to being healthy , he's really going to turn it on and those who are calling him "over the hill" are going to regret doing so. Having said that, Kidd's trade value is probably at an all-time low right now. It would be interesting to see what kind of offers the Nets get for him in Jan assuming he is able to play by then.

Look, if we were a team with other decent players around Kidd, then hell yeah I would want to keep him. But RJ and Kidd are not going to get us anywhere. Especially when Kidd is unhappy about the departure of Martin.

But any trade that gets rid of Kidd without at least getting some sort of player with potential is a horrible trade. If I had even the slightest say, the only way I'd ever make a trade with Portland that gives up Kidd without getting back at least Telfair in addition to an expiring contract is if I was convinced that Kidd's injury is going to forever make him 1/10th the player that he was.
If Kidd comes back he's obviously worth more than just an expiring contact.
... however on a side note: if the trade does get us Abdur-Rahim for Kidd I'd look to ship Abdur-Rahim somewhere else for another expiring contract + incentive, ie what the Hawks did with Rasheed Wallace last night. No sense in having a talented expiring contract if its decided we're already tanking the year.

This trade is basically thorwing in the towel for the next few years.
With a healthy Kidd, RJ, and if a few of the guys somehow produce (Nenad suprises, Mercer a great comeback, or Mourning can play)....These nets are in the playoffs...and in the East they may even go to the second round
Trading for SAR is basically the owners going 100% about money, and forgetting fan-base. Playoffs will be very unlikely for several years.
Do we do it? three month ago, i would be laughing...now....who knows?

If I was a Nets fan and they did that deal I'd cry, UNLESS it was Kidd for SAR, Telfair & Sergei Monya....you'll need another PG other than just Zoran Plainic (although I do think Zoran will turn out good) so Telfair would be there but he's so risky and Monya will make up for that because Monya is going to be a star and he's a SG which you guys need. They seem to like Khryapa but are forgetting about Monya and I think Monya is the best player they drafted.

Um the Blazers haven't forgotten about Monya. He is under contract with his Euro team until next year. Khryapa's contract buyout was 300,000, as where Monya's is 1 mil. until next year then it is 0.
Also you Nets fans think Kidd is worth so much. He is an aging point guard with a knee injury that has a horrific contract. SAR is aa all-star PF whos salary comes off the books next year. As a Blazer fan I want Kidd, but Telfair and Monya is a bit much. I think Telfair will be in the deal which is sad, along with SAR, but I think the other filler will be Woods and some scrub for Kidd and Mourning...........If it even happens

That would make the most sense - but I know Portland would like to do something with Damon also - god luck balancing the cap.

I think the deal, if it happens will turn out like this:
SAR/DA/ for Kidd/Mourning
Kristic/SAR/RJ/DA/??
Pretty decent. Hell, DA can play the 1..
Theo/Zach/Miles/NVE/Kidd
Playoffs..4-6th seed.
Kidd brings something beyond the game, he has that rare talent to make players around him better. And he would be a great great mentor to Telfair.
