Collins Seeking 6 yrs., $40M
Frm Friday's Bergen Record:
Quote:
League sources said Collins' agent, Arn Tellem, is looking for around $40 million over six years. Collins' career averages of 5.4 points and 4.5 rebounds make the asking price seem exorbitant. But Tellem wants what centers Mark Blount ($38.6 million), Adonal Foyle ($41 million) and Rasho Nesterovic ($42 million) received.
The Nets, who opened their preseason schedule by losing to the Knicks on Thursday, have until Oct. 31 to extend Collins' deal or he becomes a restricted free agent after the season.
"We're still having conversations, but we haven't reached a conclusion yet," Thorn said. "If it makes sense for us and for him, then we'll get something done. If it doesn't, then we won't."
Understandably, the Nets are skeptical about giving Collins, who makes $1.9 million this year, that lucrative a contract. One source said, "The Nets may wait it out. They could see if he has a good year and see what the market dictates. They could always match it."

Seems a little steep to me, and if he's not willing to come down from that number, I would wait and see how Krstic develops over the course of the season before shelling out $40M for Twin.

That's completely ridiculous. I'd cut him just for asking for that much.

How awful is it that I can actually picture him getting something right below that next summer if he shows marginal improvement this season? If he can put up 8/6 and have a nice April, that may wind up being what he costs. I wouldn't give him half of that myself.

Whether Krstic develops or not, Collins is not worth anywhere near that.
If I had my way, we would cut Collins. I cannot stand him. I think he's weak in every aspect of the game.

Man what bull! I have furniture in my house that moves better than he does an the guy only has one thing going for him... He has a reasonable injury record. I think let him walk, you can get better value elsewhere. I'd say 5 years at 19 mil is fair, anything else he can get in different uniform for all I care.

Collins needs to chop a zero off his asking price. He's junk.
These guys think now that because they're over 6'11, they deserve half the NBA's annual revenue.
40 million...I'd laugh him right out of the room if I were Thorn.

Talk about summing up someone's feelings. Jeez, when I saw Collins here, I was hoping this wasn't Jason. I was hoping this was some amazing Collins we hadn't yet seen in the NBA. Jason and his brother are journeyman types of big men.
40 million, these mofos need to get into stand up comedy.

atleast its not as much as foyle's 6 year, $42 million. But really, what is he thinking...there is no way he deserves that much. I really don't see him getting all that much better then he is now...which is just a decent backup center, but he starts for us cause he's all we got.

Jason Collins
Nice to see some sanity in here. Some of the posters in the NJ.com forum don't think $40 mil over 6 years is enough for the incredible talents of Jason Collins.
Collins should be ecstatic at a 4 year, $15 mil contract, and I'm not sure he's worth that.

I think a 4 year 12-13millon dollar contract would be reasonable.

I pray that he doesn't resign. I'd rather Evan Eschmeyer then him. At least Evan looked like he tried. I know Collins tries, but he is constantly outplayed night in and night out. When you are low in talent, you try to make it up in hustle like Scalabrine. But, Collins doesn't.
No way would I even want Collins back. He is a waste of a roster spot. They should've held onto Deke.

I think some of you folks are going a little too far. Collins is nothing special, but it isn't like opposing centers score 20 points against him every night. Of course, that's mainly because there just aren't very many good centers in the league. It's true Collins can't hit a 2 foot shot when defended. But at least he plays fundamentally sound and does the little things like take charges.
I won't be too shocked if Collins improves his game a little this season. Last year was a big disappointment from him.
At any rate, right now I would give him around 4 years at $16 million.

This will be Collins' 4th season in the NBA. He is 25 years old going on 26, he has a journeyman career ahead of him, not someone you pay 40 million dollars to.
Paying a scrub like him 40 million dollars, when he doesn't rebound very well or block shots, doesn't make sense. It would be like signing Jim McIllvaine to a big contract. Bad news.

Scrub center demanding big payday. Really, what's the big news?
