Mercer Out

They just said before the sixers game that Mercer was out indefinitely. He's going to have exploratory surgery to see whats wrong. Hopefully its nothing major.

Take this for what it's worth, but Ian and Kelly are saying there is a good chance of bring Brandon Armstrong back if Mercer is going to be out for an extended period, since he already knows the system.

Thanks for the update (still at work).

Armstrong. Interesting. Makes sense since he knows the offense. Hopefully, they stick with the big line-up for a while.

RON MERCER, who started the first three games of the season at shooting guard, will undergo exploratory arthroscopic surgery on his left knee next Monday, Nets General Manager ED STEFANSKI announced before the game. Mercer, who signed a 2-year, $3.36 million deal during the off-season, was the Nets' third leading scorer heading into tonight, at 9.3 points per game. Stefanski said the Nets - who signed the 28-year-old Mercer to help replace KERRY KITTLES, who was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers over the summer - are looking to sign a shooting guard or a small forward in Mercer's absence.

"We have a list," Stefanski said. "But we don't have a guy." That list could now include SHANDON ANDERSON, who bought out of his contract and waived by the Knicks. Should the Sixers agree to buy out the contract of GLENN ROBINSON, Anderson could also find his way onto the list. ... As for EDDIE ROBINSON, who was recently bought out by the Bulls, Stefanski said, "He's a name. We have a list of guys."

Hmm. Interesting names. I guess Anderson would be the most reliable, but I think I still prefer Armstrong.

So at the least, Mercer is gone for a month.

Meanwhile, the Nets are wasting no time in finding help. They've drawn up a list of candidates to provide help at the two or three spot. Among the names: former Net Brandon Armstrong, ex-Knick Matt Carroll, point guard Troy Bell and forwards Dan Langhi and Eddie Robinson, late of the Bulls.
Troy Bell was a lottery pick a few years ago, he might be a good pick up...then again, there is probably a reason why Memphis released him. Eddie Robinson could be interesting, but I don't know.

Don't need another point guard. Already have 3, and Kidd is that much closer to coming back to make it 4. None of these guys would make a huge impact. I would just go for the best shooter of the bunch, since the Nets still don't have much of a 3-pt. threat, except for maybe Buford.

not only do we have players that no one knows, but now we have to replace those players with other unknowns..

why didn't we just become a nbdl team this year?

or hell, why didn't we just draft the team that won that league last year.

Ron Mercer isn't a star, far far far from it, but he's not an unknown. And the names like Glenn Robinson, Eddie Robinson and Shandon Anderson that are being talked about, they aren't no names.

What about Awvee Storey?

Currently the Nets don't have a roster spot for another player. Kidd, Jabari Smith, and Awvee Storey are on the Injured List. Perhaps the Nets would give Storey or Smith a chance to take Mercer's spot on the active roster. Articles this preseason described Storey as a hadrworking, good rebounding swingman. We've seen Armstrong play, and I don't see how he could be better than Storey.

Yeah, but with Mercer out, the Nets might be seeking another scorer, and neither Smith or Storey fits the bill. I would guess that Storey would be the victim of Mercer's injury.

Post claims it will be Armstrong:

Quote:
A familiar face should be re-joining the Nets today.

Guard Brandon Armstrong, the third first-round pick from the 2001 draft night trade that also netted Richard Jefferson and Jason Collins, is expected to be signed today to fill the vacancy created by the absence of Ron Mercer, who's headed for arthroscopic knee surgery. In three seasons, Armstrong totaled 108 games for the Nets, averaging 2.2 points on .352 shooting. Golden State recently waived Armstrong.

"He knows the system, he developed into a good defender last year and he obviously can shoot the ball," said team president Rod Thorn, who noted the deal was not finalized. "He's one of the guys we certainly would be looking at."

We will find out soon enough...

Well there already was the drama of Brandon and Sly each having the same number, but thats a little different (although both got about the same amount of playing time).

He should take 54 as a tribute to Rodney.

Wouldn't Big Dog Robinson be a good fit? You guys need a scorer desparately, even when Kidd is back. I don't know how the Nets would even go about getting him though.
