Game 27: Nets @ Bulls--12.28.04

New Jersey Nets (9-17) at Chicago Bulls (9-16)
Tuesday, 12.28.2004, 8:30 PM EST
United Center - Chicago, IL
TV: YES, WGN, NBALP
The Nets travel to Chicago Tuesday to take on the improving Bulls. Before Sunday's loss to the Bucks, Chicago had reeled off 5 straight wins against some solid competition. With 4 rookies in the rotation, the Bulls will continue to improve. In their last 10 games before Sunday, they had been holding their opponents to a league-leading 39% shooting. Jerome Moiso is expected to join the Nets Tuesday, and Vince Carter should be fine after suffering cramps in Detroit, but Brian Scalabrine will miss a second straight game with a strained hamstring.

It's a critical game for the Nets to get their feet under them and start moving forward out of the "adjustment period". Ws are precious right now.

Last night was a play-off game in December and the Pistons pulled out their championship defense. Tonight, I want to see what the Nets new-look offense can do after a week of practice and then sharpening up in real game action against the best defense in the NBA.
Even after a physical OT game, VC's cramps and on a back-to-back, I'll go out on a limb and predict a 100-plus point game out of the Nets tonight.
After the Cavs and Pistons frontcourts, it'll be another good game to gauge the Nets big men against the likes of Antonio Davis, Curry and Chandler. I'd like to see Jabari Smith's PT go up by 5-10 minutes between PF and C. I said earlier I'd like to see 5 minutes for Smith come from Twin, mostly because I like the better quickness in the Krstic-Smith pairing, but I'm looking at the box score and I see Krstic played 46 minutes last night. I'm thinking rookie wall, and maybe it would better if Krstic's MPG increased at a slower pace.
I'd like to see better defense, particularly the Nets backcourt against the Bulls' young, enthusiastic guards. And yeah, a win would be nice.

I think the Nets adjustment period has a lot to do with Kidd's adjustment period, which at least is better than the Nets losing period.

Still, they're 5-5 since his return (none of the wins by more than 5 points), and can't afford to play .500 ball the rest of the way. Time to start getting in gear.

The Nets have gone through so many changes. They're almost a 1/3 of the way through the season and they're a newly remade team. RJ is changing his role with Kidd and VC. Twin is really the only player in the same role. Kidd is shuttled on and off the floor, and he can't do all the things his teammates expect of him. The Nets used to be a top defensive team that triggered the best fastbreak in the NBA with an iffy halfcourt offense. Now their halfcourt offense is their relative strength, they hardly ever fastbreak and their defense breaks down a lot.
With all the other changes, I think the biggest culprit is the Nets drop off on defense. Defense makes up for many other deficiencies - see the Pistons. The effort is still there, but they're just not going to replace the defensive impact of Kittles and Martin, and really, (a healthy) Kidd.
If the season started now, the Nets would still be adjusting but they'd be okay. They're finally settling in. They just gave every other team a 2 month and 8 game head start.

So far, Jefferson has cost us 6 easy points.
EDIT: Carter and Jefferson are playing absolutely horrible.
