A Big Advantage of a Deep Draft

Lots of players who normally would get drafted--and can play in the NBA--won't get drafted, meaning good scouting could lead to undrafted players getting contracts.

Here's a list of NBA players who were never drafted:

Chris Andersen, Hornets, 7.7 ppg, 1.5 bpg.

Chucky Atkins, Lakers, 13.6 ppg, 4.4 apg.

Bruce Bowen, Spurs, 8.2 ppg, 3.5 rpg, five time All-Defensive Team, one championship ring

Earl Boykins, Nuggets 12.4 ppg, 4.5 apg.

Marquis Daniels, Mavs 9.1 ppg, 3.6 rpg, Top 10 in steals per turnover.

Udonis Haslem, Heat 10.9 ppg, 9.1 rpg, 4th in field goal percentage.

Mike James, Rockets, 11.8 ppg, 3.6 apg, one championship ring.

Damon Jones, Heat, 11.6 ppg, 43.2% beyond the arc. In NBA Top 10 in five categories.

Slava Medvedenko, Lakers 3.8 ppg in injury plagued season. two championship rings.

Brad Miller, Kings 15.6 ppg in injury plagued season. led NBA centers with 4 apg. All-Star in 2003.

Andres Nocioni, Bulls, 8.4 ppg, 5 rpg in rookie year.

Quinton Ross, Clippers, 5.1 ppg, ranks No. 12 in steals per turnover

Ben Wallace, Pistons, 9.7 ppg, 12.2 rpg, 3-time Defensive Player of the Year, 3-time All-NBA. Two-time All-Star. One championship ring.

David Wesley, Rockets, 11.9 ppg, 37.5% beyond the arc.

NOTE: Three of the "never drafted all-stars" played their first NBA games with the Nets: Boykins, Jones and Wesley, all in the John Nash era. Nets didn't resign any of the three.

Think that will happen, or will teams draft more carefully?

Re: A Big Advantage of a Deep Draft

There is only so many spaces. In a deep draft, people get left by the wayside. And if the new CBA calls for 14 active players, there is more room for decent players.

Some players bloom later. Europe is filled with solid American players who didn't get enough of a chance in the NBA and the became much better players over there. This year, the Euroleague MVP trophy and the Euroleague Final Four MVP trophy have gone to players who played high school and college ball in the US but was never drafted: Anthony Parker and Sarunas Jasikevicus, who were regular season and Final Four MVP's. Parker played high school ball in Napierville, Ill., college ball at Bradley, then was taken by the Nets in the first round and traded to Philly. Jasikevecius played high school ball in Quarrysville, PA, college ball and Maryland but was never drafted.

This is why the NBA needs a much bigger and better organized minor league system

Would make a lot of sense. Chad Ford wrote recently that 49 players have been listed as first round choices in recent mock drafts. I am sure the same is true of the much woolier second round mocks, meaning something like 100 players have made an appearance in one or more mock draft.
