RJ's contract gamble
Last summer, RJ took financial security instead of gambling on the FA market this summer. It most likely cost him a tidy sum.
RJ signed for 6 years and 76 million (as close to the max as Kenyon's contract) while Joe Johnson is getting at least a 5 year 70 million dollar deal. The reason for this disparity is the significant raise in the salary cap
Probably the biggest fear for RJ was that owners were pushing for contracts of 4 years / 5 years for their own players but ended up giving into 5/6.
So once again, Thorn gets lucky

Re: RJ's contract gamble
Not only that, I think Cavs would have persued RJ as hard as Redd or Allen. RJ would have gotten a max offer from the Cavs for sure. Larry Hughes is good but RJ is way better. I said this before on another thread. Imagine RJ and LJ together, 23 and 24. They already got a nice center in Z and a big in gooden. that team could have gone to the east finals if they clicked.

Re: RJ's contract gamble
RJ saved himself some serious peace of mind as well. Let's not forget, he did miss 50 games last year. That's what guys worry about, contract wise. Getting injured before you can cash in. And RJ got injured. It could have lowered his pricetag.

Johnson won't get a max contract (Bird Rights signed type)?

good point, but the docs assured him a full recovery and he really did contribue a lot during the heat series. he did a good job on Wade and had some cool aeril moves. I think the cavs would have taken that risk, any team would. It wasnt a career threathing injury.

Still to be seen. I haven't seen any reports yet with a 6 year contract

In this case, it was the result of preying on RJ's fears. He really needs to fire his agent

Re: RJ's contract gamble
Could it be that $78 million is enough for some people? Would $78 million have gotten K-Mart to sign an extension at the time?

Re: RJ's contract gamble
What if he really wanted to stay in NJ? Have you guys considered that?
I'm sure after Kenyon was gone, he knew he would be the face of the franchise after Kidd retires...

Re: RJ's contract gamble
I would go as far as saying RJ gambled correctly.

TJ Ford found his way back into the Raptors starting lineup, after presenting coach Sam Mitchell with a industrial-sized case of S-Curl texturizer. Jose Calderon came with Nu Nile, after being purposely misinformed by a giggling Anthony Parker.
Gordon and Deng's strategy during contract negotiations should consist only of a picture of Kirk Hinrich and repeated utterances of the following: "C'mon, man! The ****!?!?" Paxon would crack.
So, they're gonna miss the playoffs WITH Iverson? Listen, people, it's time you reevaluate just how good Iverson is and what he brings to a team.

Re: RJ's contract gamble
RJ wasn't greedy like most NBA players he was satisfied with that contract. 76 million is a ****load of money.
He wanted to be a Net for his whole career and that was more important than money.
KMart made that mistake.
