Draft Question
Are you allowed to guarantee a foreign player that you will pick him in the first round before he is permanently in the draft? If that is possible I think we should guarantee Sergio Rodriguez a first round pick as he could easily be Jason Kidd's heir if he is allowed to play behind Kidd and slowly take over.

Re: Draft Question
I guess you can, but its very risky, you never know what the teams ahead of you have planned. Usually you hear of guys refusing to work out for certain teams because they have gotten guarantees from so and so teams.

Re: Draft Question
I have read reports repeatedly, that such and such a player decided to stay in the draft after he received a 'guarantee' from such and such team. So, that would seem to indicate that 'guarantees' can be made before permanent draft status is determined. I am aware of no reason why there would be a difference between what is allowed for a foreign player vs. a homegrown one. As a related note, such 'guarantees' aren't binding in any way shape or form.

Re: Draft Question
Look at Martynas Andruskevicius (pardon me if I murdered his name). This was a kid that was supposedly the next Sabonis, it seems he got a guarantee somewhere that he would end up a lotto pick. Now in his best interest, he should have gone back to Europe and developed his game and picked up some weight but he stupidly stayed in the draft. Eventually he was picked in the second round by the cavs. He is rarely getting any playing time and he has missed out on millions

Re: Draft Question
The Spurs told Krstic they were guaranteed taking him in the first round. Then the Nets stole him without even giving him a workout.

Re: Draft Question
What would you guys think of picking up Sergio Rodriguez in the 1st round this year? Guy seems to be a talented PG that could be a amazing player. I say he is worth one of our first rounders if we can get him.

Don't like the Jay Williams comparison of nbadraft.net though they comment on that at the end cause after reading up on him he seems to be a much better player as well as PG.

If we could get a quality young PG that could play next to JKidd as well as in place of him, I wouldn't be against it. But every resource we have, IMO, has to be thrown at acquiring some acceptable big men before the JKidd championship window closes. There's no back up PG in the world that can fix what's wrong w/ this team.

hmmm i agree but in another sense I think that by drafting an heir to the PG spot we prop the championship window open significantly because even when Kidd inevitably slows down he can play in tandem with the rising PG. Could also be my very long term outlook on things. But that is just how I see. I also see your point though.

I agree that if over the next couple of years the Nets could get going what the Jazz had going w/ Stockton for the last several years of his career, w/ the capable back up and limiting Stockton's minutes, that the Nets could keep this going for longer than we would be able to wo/ that player. But I also think that unless we fix our big man issues, its all moot.

hmmm agreed with one addendum: the back-up needs to be a player that can eventually become our main PG. Otherwise i agree on the other points.

Yes, I agree. Gotta be a grooming situation.
