A Tale Of Two Streaks
The current winning streak is more sustainable. The previous one was predicated on over-reliance on Vince Carter and the starting five. It petered out when they burnt out.
Kick-started by an unheralded reserve named Scott Padgett, the NETS learned one way to win last year. The current streak was sparked by Zoran Planinic, but all the reserves are getting in the act. The NETS are learning to win in many ways.
The starters are putting in more quality time - instead of pacing themselves - and that makes all the difference in the world. The reserves are keeping the starters fresh. Wave after wave is more than opposing teams can handle. It's a testament to how good the NETS' bench truly is.
It's also a tribute to how great the starters are on any given night that they can grab a lead and rely on the bench to hold it. One of the most poignant moments is Kidd running the break with Planinic. He's trying to help the younger man improve his game. Now that's a team.
Heading into the playoffs, the NETS need to sustain and build on their momentum. They need to continue integrating their reserves.
The team is a V-12 engine - not a 4 cylinder. They need to learn how to continue to click on all 12 cylinders - not just 4.
While other teams are 1 to 4 cylinder economy jobs, the NETS' engine grows stronger each day. Each roster player contributes and proper integration ensures that the engine doesn't sputter, choke or seize ... that it grows stronger ... to mow down the opposition ... in synchronized harmony.
Like the old Cadillac V8-6-4, the NETS' V-12-8-4 needs to keep humming to keep the most powerful cylinders fresh for the climb. The on-board computer, Point Guard Jason Kidd, has to make sure the circuits are firing as the master chip, Coach Lawrence Frank, keeps tinkering with the tune.
The playoffs are distinguished by intensity, defense and physical play. The NETS must get their V-12 in tune to mow down the turbocharged, hi-horsepower, 4 cylinder econojobs out there.
