Re: Renaldo Balkman could be the next Rodman or Artest
Balkman might have gone undrafted. Marcus Williams, Kyle Lowry, and Rajon Rondo (and Jordan Farmar) were still on the board. So Isiah goes ahead, drafts Balkman, and then selects a POINT GUARD with the 29th pick in the draft. God help Mardy Collins if he doesn't play the point because I don't see him having the skills to play at the 2 or 3, he's not athletic enough and he's not a great shooter.
If Thomas loved Balkman so much he could have gotten him at 29. He left SHANNON BROWN (who is three million times the player Collins is), Maurice Ager, and the aforementioned point guards on the board.

What I DO know is that "conventional wisdom" is nothing more than the sum of all biases and prejudices that those in our society collect by age eighteen. Think for yourself; don't let others' preconceptions do the thinking for you. And don't be afraid to go out on a limb, to take a risk, even if proven wrong. Every idea that has changed the course of history was ridiculed, from Da Vinci to Newton to Copernicus to Darwin to Edison. In each case, "conventional wisdom" was crumpled up in a ball and tossed in the wastebasket.
And so what stands as "conventional wisdom" slowly evolves.
Closer to home, "conventional wisdom" would have us believe that Jason Collilns is valueless because he doesn't score many points, block many shots, or grab many rebounds. How many of you actually believe that?
Give this kid a chance. Yes, maybe he was overpicked. But, also, maybe he was overpicked merely because no one else shares Isiah's vision, and maybe, just maybe, he will be a heck of a player.

Dumpy, what you said makes sense on the talent evaluation level. But the draft is two levels - talent evaluation and value evaluation. If you think a player is good but no one else thinks so, it's not efficient to take him to early. I bet if Isaiah took the BPA at 20 and traded down from 29 into the 30s, he could've received an extra pick in the process and still picked Balkman

there are two other parts of the equation: (1) the poker game. If Isiah really wanted this guy, he had to be willing to pay to ensure he got him. Maybe Phoenix was going to take him, maybe Phoenix psyched him out. In my fantasy baseball league last year, I psyched someone else into selecting Bonds in the third round--I sure as heck wasn't going to take him, but I wanted to make sure he didn't slip to round ten or so where he might be a bargain. Which brings up the point that as a GM, you should never fall so in love with a player so that you cease to see him objectively. (2) Isiah wants the APPEARANCE that he is a genius. To do that, you have to go out of your way to do wacky things. Remember last year, the Spurs stepped up to take Ian Mahinmi, and all the commentators were bowing to their greatness. Gimme a break!

Re: Renaldo Balkman could be the next Rodman or Artest
Yeah, it looks like Phoenix probably wouldn't have taken him...
Quote:
When Isiah Thomas defended his decision to nab defensive South Carolina small-forward defensive specialist Renaldo Balkman at 20 instead of waiting for 29, he said his "due diligence" discovered the Suns were going to take him at either 21 or 27.
Sherlock Holmes, Isiah is not. Three sources, including one inside the Suns organization, told The Post yesterday Phoenix was not taking Balkman in the first round and that's not why they traded their picks. One league source who spoke to a Suns official said if Balkman was available at 45, they would have passed.
As such, Thomas could have selected his point-guard-of-the-future in lottery-projected Marcus Williams at 20, then secured mystery man Balkman at 29. A rebuilding team passing on Williams is shortsighted, as Marbury is 29 with a lot of mileage and sore knees, and Francis is 29 going on 39.

Re: Renaldo Balkman could be the next Rodman or Artest
With any luck, Balkman could become a rotation player.
The only way he gets anywhere near Artest or Rodman level though is if he dresses in drag, kicks a cameraman and/or starts a riot.

Re: Renaldo Balkman could be the next Rodman or Artest
For a team that starts Jason Collins,I find it ironic that you guys would dump on Balkman...
First off,the knicks were not drafting any combo guards for the obvious reasons, and Marcus Williams was not a great fit for the Knicks...
I know you guys love him at 22,but there is a reason why a supposed lottery pick fell as far as he did.Whether you like it or not,his character could be in question,he has 14% body fat,had HORRIBLE combine scores and many felt he looked better than he is due to the fact that he played on a team(and system) that was stacked with talent. The other issue is he had a very difficult time staying in front of the quicker guards in workouts..That doesnt mean he wont turn out to be a stud, but it certainly raise questions....
As there were no big men left,Zeke wanted guys who could D it up,were "DOGS" and could fill a need. Its pretty obvious the Knicks have a bunch of "talented" players who are soft, all about scoring, and cant even spell D let alone play it.....
While most of you and the genius sportswriters are ripping Balkman, perhaps you should pay more attention to what 2 guys named Larry Brown and Billy Donovan were saying..Balkman was the guy that Larry Brown had to have.He was the player in Orlando who Brown loved.Billy Donovan, who coached the NCAA champs and saw Blackman 3 times felt Balkman was the perfect fit for the knicks..
The champs lost to Florida 3 times, and Balkman was a major reason. The guy has a non stop motor, and gave Florida fits....
You guys should know better than to listen to the so called experts.Jason Collins is your utility man, while Antoine Wright cant get off the bench....
Zekes picks fit the teams needs, and give Brown an assist as apparantly all was not lost in the Brown fiasco...

Re: Renaldo Balkman could be the next Rodman or Artest
riiight I'm sure you were happy when you heard David Stern announce Blankman's name. I think he's an o.k. pick though he can be the hustle player on the Knicks.
It's not that he was picked but #20 in the first round that has everyone shocked.
some Knick fans wanted Marcus Williams.. www.basketballboards.net/forum/showthread.php?t=283612&page=1

You guys are awfully cocky for a team that squeaked by a Peja less Indy and barely missed the broom from Miami..
You better hope Marcus Williams works for you too,as Kidd made second teir Anthony Johnson look like MJ...
Enjoy the season
