CHICAGO - Richard Jefferson has had his share of physical issues this season, and the Nets' small forward showed up in the Windy City yesterday with a new one - a black eye.
Jefferson was sporting a shiner under his right eye when he reported to the Nets' morning shootaround prior to the team's 86-83 win over the Bulls last night. Jefferson said he was hit in the eye during Tuesday's 101-86 win over the Raptors.
However, there is little evidence that suggests Jefferson sustained the black eye during Tuesday's game. The injury was never mentioned during Lawrence Frank's postgame interview or by Jefferson in the locker room after the game. A review of Jefferson's postgame interview shot by YES did not reveal any signs of an eye injury.
Adding to the mystery was the fact that Jefferson was excused from Wednesday's practice for "personal reasons."
"I just got hit in the eye," Jefferson said in the morning before repeating the explanation prior to the game. Nets president Rod Thorn supported Jefferson's claim and sources at a party Jefferson attended at a Manhattan club following the game said nothing had happened there.
