He's getting $61.8mm over 4 years. That averages $15.45mm per year.
Can't see how it would decrease from $16.8 down to $16.3 and not be over the reported $61.8mm total.

Re: Darko Math
According to this article, VC's agent wanted the contract to average the 16 million he would have gotten if he exercised the option:

Doesn't the MLE not count towards your slary cap if used?

Either that or the $61.8mm that has been reported is inaccurate.

The MLE does not count against the cap until you sign a player using it.

Well you can't just divide the contract between years since its prorated. He's getting a different amount each year.

Re: Darko Math
The $16M option doesn't matter in this case because he opted out of his contract; therefore he is signing a brand new contract.
Anyhow, I think it's worth the money, and we can still use the MLE regardless of VC's salary.

Yes, you can divide the contract by the number of years if you are looking for the average.

16.8, 15.5, 15, 14.5
$500,000 raise next season, from the $16.3 he was going to get, then declining salaries the remaining three years.

I understand a declining salary. Still doesn't equal an average salary equal to the $16.3 million he would have gotten if he exercised the option that his agent supposedly wanted, which was the purpose of my post.

Damn straight. If you look at his career averages, if he got 30 mpg, he could average 9/5/2 with 1.5 spg and good defense at the 2.

NI: Where did you get these numbers from? When I first heard about the contract, I immediately went to figure out what the cap load for this year would be under the usual, 10% increase structure. I came away with this:
13.32 - 14.65 - 16.11 - 17.72. If that's the case, then Dave D's total salary commitments number for next year looks about right. . . and (if your cap estimate is on target) we still have over 4MM to spend under the threshold.
