What are Nets fans expecting from Marcus Williams?
This thread is similar to my VC thread with the same title.
I have been reading Marcus is a bust and he will be better next year.
My question to Nets fans what are you expecting from Marcus Williams in his second year with the Nets?
Me personally I expect the kid to improve but nothing to drastic. He will make some mistakes but he is still young and learning. As long as the Nets and their coach contiue to have faith in their young player.
Marcus has shown flashes of how great he can be (phx game) and he also has shown how his talent falls to number 21 in the draft.

So if people getting paid millions are not too concern about the Net competing for a ring. Why should I be? I'm going to be a fan watch games and cheer. but I'm not going to kill myself over what the Nets are and are not doing

Re: What are Nets fans expecting from Marcus Williams?
I expect him to be the backup to kidd while getting increasing minutes
I say about 20-22 mpg, 8ppg, 5 apg.. Improve a bit on his defense and i will be happy.

Re: What are Nets fans expecting from Marcus Williams?
I know he will play but not sure how much. I think he will struggle with defense and turnovers. If the nets sign a defensive pg then he might not play that much. If he plays 12 min a game I dont see how he can improve that much. I think he needs to play somewhere like Atlanta where he can start and become a less athletic Marbury.

now that what has me thinking. say if the nets land knight. A move like that will slow down Marcus development and confidence I think

I agree with yer initial post in this thread. It basically sums up how I feel about Marcus as a whole.
The resounding theme of the Nets is that the youth needs confidence. Zoran, Anotine, Hassan, Josh, and Marcus have all mentioned it at one point or another. But there comes a point where it's confidence and it's not getting the job done.
I have as high a hopes for Marcus as just about anybody but everything I saw of him in summer league scares the crap outa me because the one big flaw in his game, and the reason he was sat so often last season, doesn't look any different. I mean I can count the times he even attempted to put his hand up on D on one hand and that simply won't get it done. The easiest thing Marcus can do on the court is create for himself but is doing it at the rate he's doing isn't going to help this team. A team which is comprised of roughly 8+ players who need to be setup to be effective for us. I mean it's no coincidence that we won today's game despite his poor shooting because he got the others involved and it probably could have been a blowout if we could have reigned in their guards even a little bit.
I think it will take a Knight acquisition at this point to not only test his mettle but to allow Marcus to figure out if he wants to be a 2 guard who can pass or a point guard with range. We played House and Williams together last season there's no reason we couldn't give a Knight/Williams combo a try.

good post.
sign brevin and light a fire under his ***. it would let him know that if he doesn't want to distribute, he isn't going to play.

There's the motivation factor but there's also letting him figure out where he's going to succeed and whether its what the Nets will ultimately want out of him or not. I mean it's gotta be confusing for a young player to be brought in and lauded for his ability to distribute but but then gets the most praise for his shooting and put in lineups where he's expected to do that alongside the guy he's supposed to be giving a breather.
It's hard enough to be thrown right into and asked to lead an offense that has seen more player casualties than successes but then be asked to find a groove for yourself and yer teammates with no real margin for error in limited play action. That's alot for anybody and an acquisition like Knight could allow him to find that balance and have a capable vet on the floor with him.
I mean we can talk about confidence until the cows come home but if Marcus can't figure out the most obvious thing he has to do, that he has to attempt to guard people to play for us, then he's not gonna be much use for us and the way we play. That's the hard work we need to see, Hassan's priority was the jumpshot, not Marcus.

agreed, with both of your posts. confidence is an obvious problem with wright, but with marcus, his only problem when we drafted him was supposed to be defense, not shot selection and ball-hogging.
marcus better chickity-check himself before he wrecks himself

Re: What are Nets fans expecting from Marcus Williams?
I expect him to come into this year with a better grip on NBA-level basketball; that a year's experience can bring. This means better decision making, less "home-run" style "thread the needle" passes (unless he's confident that he can make them). I would expect a decrease in his turnovers, perhaps an increase in his assist numbers. I think the jury is still out if his defense will get better. He's still got a high ceiling, but we haven't seen improved D so far.
