OT:Gambling Scandal...So what?
Am I the only one that isn't really that shocked by it and also very indifferent to it? Yes the integrity of the game is sacred, but unless I find out it is a massive crew of people in on it, or that the game's future integrity is permanently clouded in uncertainty as well, I'm not sure if that indifference will change.
Doesn't this sort of thing find its way in every sport in some form? Players betting on themselves, throwing games, throwing fights, etc.
Just my honest reaction and I was wondering if there were other people who felt the same. Different is fine too, if this really rocks your faith in the game to the core I'd like to hear why cause maybe there's something I'm missing, or maybe I'm just a terrible person hahaha.

Re: OT:Gambling Scandal...So what?
I'd be surprised if there were only one crooked ref and no crooked players in the NBA.
Not that I think this investigation will uncover any other activities, unless Donaghy has names to give up.

In my view, it's nearly impossible for there to be crooked players in sports like baseball and basketball and football. The players that can make a difference just make too much damn money to care about betting on games that they play in, or to be swayed by some gambler that wants them to fix a game. In football there may be low-paid linemen that could miss a tackle or a block, but they're not in there every day and don't have as much control over the final score.

No... not at all.
The reason this is a shock is because it's a blow to the integrity of the game. Maybe you aren't shocked because you think this happens more often. But it really doesn't.

And you are entitled to that opinion.
I'm more skeptical and cynical than you are.

Re: OT:Gambling Scandal...So what?
There was a good article about reffing legend Mike Mathis who retired in 2002. He said the refs are controlled by Stern. The stats are controlled by Stern, so whatever they want to say, they will say it. He says it's an old boys club. Friends hire friends of friends. They're all buddies before entering this profession. Basically easier for Stern to control and do what he wants.

So what point are you making here?
You are OK with sports not being real because - Hey! These guys are humans after all and humans are no damn good!
So as long as only one person at a time is fixing the games and completely invalidating the entire league, it's cool because that behavior is to be expected.
It only bothers you if several people at a time rig the games. That's over the line.
If I'm misinterpreting, let me know where I got it wrong.

Re: OT:Gambling Scandal...So what?
I'm not really arguing for anything, hence I don't have a point, I was just saying what I felt and I wanted to know what others thought.
Ghoti you brought up a good point though that I should clarify from the first post that my initial and honest reaction was that I thought it was of course a terrible thing, but not so terrible that the league is in dire straits that from now on any NBA game I watch I'm going to be thinking, "oh these refs are cheating" Unless a deeper investigation reveals that more zebras are involved in these sort of enterprises than I plan on giving most refs the benefit of the doubt until there is evidence that suggests otherwise.
Hopefully that clears up something.
edit:
Also the other reason for my indifference I think stems from the fact that, yes his terrible actions affected the outcome of games last season, but what can we do about it? Those games have passed, it's vaguely like steroids in baseball, do you put an * on Bonds' record (although I don't believe hes been proven to use steroids has he?) you can only fix things for now and the future, and as long as the league does that than what more can we ask for? I love basketball too much for this to stop me from watching.

Re: OT:Gambling Scandal...So what?
What we will learn next is how poorly qualified most of the NBA refs are on arrival...that there is a pattern of cronyism and corruption. Ronnie Nunn will not survive this. He will be the sacrifical lamb.
