KMart + 5 Years = ????
I think it's smart we aren't in a rush to sign him with a big deal because part way into a long term contract, I think he will become a totally different player.
Without his speed, he is a Charles Oakley or Brian Grant to me.
What are your thoughts on whom he would become without the speed?
And to me whomever he becomes he is no where near a Max player.

No way is he worth a max contract. Max contracts belong to guys like Shaq, Duncan, Kobe,Kidd etc. Guys that can have a huge influence on the game of basketball. Players that can actually change the outcome of a game of basketball by themselves.
From watching the finals series against the Spurs, Martin seemed to drift in and out of the game. Giving up stupid reaching in fouls against Duncan, getting frustrated, etc. His play at times dropped when he dropped his head and lost focus.
One of the things that I just could not understand about his effort in the closing game of the finals, was why he just kept resorting to firing up his jumpshot instead of getting the ball, using his quickness and getting to the rim?
From watching him, he tends to disappear from games, but then he has either a huge block or a monster dunk. But to me to get the max contract that he wants, he needs to do more and be more of a factor at times.
But if guys like Bibby, Wally, etc are able to get sizeable deals and the Nets can afford it, than he perhaps should receive a larger longer term deal.
But max contacts in my opinion, should be reserved to the guys that are the difference makers in this league. Guys who are the franchise players, who without them, the team will be nowhere. The real assassins that bring their A game each and every night.
To me without Martin, the Nets will still make the playoffs in the East. He is still a key player to them but not the most important key for them.
However if he has a monster season this year, no doubt that a team like Utah, Hawks, etc with cap room will offer him a max or close to max deal which will force the Nets hand. I feel that at the end of the year the market will determine his value.
The problem with Martin and Jefferson, is that they are going to have to do alot more for the Nets. I know that they are both young, but their ability to drift out of games and be invisible at times needs to change.
Again, if Martin demanded a trade I am sure that Thorn would get a player of a similar caliber in return.

Good thought. K-Mart's game on both ends depends so much on his athleticism right now, we have to wonder what kind of player he will be when he slows down.
Like most of us are saying, this year is the big one for K-Mart. He has been a work in progress who almost arrived by Finals Game 4 before Duncan schooled him in Game 6. He's already good with tremendous heart. The Nets counter-offer of 6 yr/66 mil was very fair. In order to deserve even a near-max contract, K-Mart needs to produce more consistently this season while showing a mastery of a wider set of skills, especially on offense.
Hm. If K-Mart's skill set remains fixed and he loses his athletic advantage? Hard to imagine, since so much of his game is built on his athleticism. I don't know if K-Mart would even be as good as mid-90s Oak, who applied a lot of veteran savvy to compensate for greatly diminished athleticism.

As much as he loses to other PF, he beats others with (skills uncommon for a PF), if not more. But those aren't long lasting skills... I just hope we do not over pay because in the future we will be sorry. Although at this time, I think he is a very special player. He brings something unconvential to the table which would be hard to replace, but I highly doubt he can keep it up for very long at the same time, which troubles me. I think his contract was very fair, Odom type money, Odom might be more trouble, but he surely has more skill and "potential".

Clarance Weatherspoon.
Harsh but I think its near the mark, spoon was as good as KMart back in the day and relied on his leap and athleticsm as Kmart does now...

I don't remember much of Weatherspoons game, but I think even now some say he is overpaid and he is no where near the max.
