How come when something bad happens some people say that the bad/unfortunate event is gay?

I don't get it. How is it homosexual or happy in any way, shape, or form?


Example:
The person who picks you up from work calls and says that he will be an hour late due to traffic, you then tell a co-worker and they say "thats gay".

it's kind of offensive and kind of funny at the same time, but i don't think the usage has any link to homosexuality except in negative connotation. gay=bad so bad=gay. except i know people who aren't homophobic at all who still use it, so...

it's like using "retarded", except each has got its own specific times to use it, maybe.
