Report: PS3 $499 on July 12

Although Sony has yet to confirm a price drop officially, GameDaily BIZ has received confirmation from the retail sector that the PS3 will be dropped to $499 next week. Sony itself recently talked about "refining" the PS3 price. Now it appears to be happening.


A PS3 price cut rumor spread like wildfire across the Internet this afternoon when several sites spotted a new advertisement from Circuit City. The ad as seen on Kotaku lists the PS3 console at $499.99, $100 less than its current price.


It wasn't clear at first if this ad was a special deal specific to the electronics retailer or if it's indeed a retail-wide price cut instituted by Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA). As it turns out, a merchandising manager (who wished to remain anonymous) at one of the world's biggest retailers has confirmed to GameDaily BIZ that the price drop is indeed retail-wide and it's scheduled to take place on July 12, although the first wave of ads to promote the PS3's new price won't kick in until Sunday, July 15.


Many analysts have speculated that Sony would drop the price on the expensive console this year, and some even predicted that it could happen this summer. It's starting to look like they were right. We're sure to find out much more next week when Sony holds its press conference at E3.


SCEA when contacted for confirmation declined to comment.

Other places are saying it could be true also. We'll see...They might have wanted it to be a surprise since the big E3 show is next week also and they might have been prepared to announce this later to generate more buzz since sales seem to be lacking.

Some Target Stores Already Selling At Reduced Price

We've received reports from a number of readers that some Target retail stores have already instituted the $100 price drop on the PLAYSTATION 3, breaking the July 12 price break and selling the 60 GB model at the new, rumored price of $499. We confirmed with Target locations in Bend, Oregon and Beavercreek, Ohio that the stores are now selling the PS3 at the new lower price. However, when we phoned eight additional Targets in Los Angeles and West Hollywood, CA, Dayton, OH, Orlando, FL, and Littleton, CO, staffers reported back that the original $599 price tag was still in effect at those stores.

I'm debating on getting this or waiting. Circuit City has a promotion where you get a free controller along with a PS3 this week...if the price reduction officially goes into play on the 12th I may go to CC and get it. Not bad value with the free controller, 5 free blue ray discs (which I'd sell) and of course the system itself.

Has it been officially confirmed that MGS4 is coming to 360? Or is it just still "probable theory" by the gaming community at this point? I hope this comes true. I love my 360, and my buddy who wasted his money on a ps3 simply for mgs4 is going to shoot himself

Last I heard it's just a rumor but I haven't kept up with that lately. Maybe we'll learn more about that at E3 this week?

After denying it for awhile, Sony finally confirms. They will also make an 80 gig PS3 that will sale for 599.99 but the old 60 gig model will be brought down to 499.99.

Today, Sony confirmed to GameSpot that a fusillade of reports from US retailers had augured last week. As of July 9, the PlayStation 3's North American price point is going south. The next-generation console will cost $499 in the US and $549 in Canada, the same price as the discontinued 20GB model. So far, the price drop is for North America only. "This news does not affect any other PS3 territory," said Dave Karraker, Sony Computer Entertainment America.

The price drop announcement was accompanied by more unexpected news: The 80GB PS3, previously only available in South Korea, is also headed stateside. The larger-capacity system will go on sale in August for $599, and will have all the functionality of the 60GB model.
