NEW ORLEANS -- For nearly 100 days, New Orleans Hornets owner George Shinn has been repeating his team's very simple goal for the off-season: "We're going to get better."
With the front office and coaching staff rebuilt, both draft choices signed and the team having declared itself done with free agency, it's time to evaluate if that goal has been met.
· Executive vice president of basketball operations/General Manager Bob Bass retired and was replaced by Allan Bristow (promoted from assistant general manager to general manager) and Willis Reed (hired away from the New York Knicks as executive vice president of basketball operations).
· Tim Floyd was fired as head coach, replaced by former Nets coach Byron Scott, whose staff consists of former Lakers and Bulls assistant and Mavericks head coach Jim Cleamons, former Raptors and Wizards head coach Darrell Walker, and Kenny Gattison, who was retained from Floyd's staff.
· The drafting of high-school standout J.R. Smith in the first round filled a long-standing need for a big shooting guard, and second-round pick Tim Pickett brings energy and potential to the same position.
· Free agency yielded two players -- forward/center Chris Andersen, a reserve with Denver, and forward Rodney Rogers, a reserve from the Nets. That's it.
Good article. We lost out on several free agents, two of whom went to Miami. The players we picked up are good additions and I'm pleased with the draft. We took a risk with a hs player and it should pay off. I hope Scott proves he is as good of a coach the organization thinks he is.
