I like the Hornets because of their incredible balance and poise.
Their backcourt is the most balanced in the conference and the second most balanced (next to Sacramento’s quartet of Bibby, Bobby, Christie, and Wallace) in the whole league. Baron Davis is a great penetrator, a creative passer, and a crunch-time dynamo who can get any shot he wants on almost anybody. David Wesley is a fundamentally sound outside shooter who never stays in a slump long, but he does take plays off on D. Courtney Alexander is a flat-out scorer who is incredibly underrated on the defensive end of the court. Heck, even Bryce Drew is a solid possession guy with good footwork and a money 3-point jumper.
Their frontcourt is so good at what they do that you can tell they are playing a good game when you don’t notice they are out there. Some nights PJ Brown gets the quietest 15 and 10 with 3 blocks that you will ever see. Jamaal Magliore comes out every night and gives a reliable performance in the middle. Whatever you get out of Elden Campbell on offense, George Lynch on defense, and Jerome Moiso and/or Tractor Traylor on either side of the ball are bonus.
That would be a good team. Those guys could make the playoffs and win a series just like that, but I haven’t even mentioned what makes them elite. Their best player is a combo forward-guard who posts up more effectively than basically anyone in the conference other than Jermaine O’Neal (and arguably Antoine Walker) and who runs the point forward spot better than Anthony Mason could ever dream and almost on the level of a Scottie Pippen or a Grant Hill in their prime. On top of that, “Monster Mash” plays tight defense and performs in the clutch night-in and night-out.
What’s not to like?
