Consider this crazy cooky idea...

Hi, visiting from the Bulls board.

Beginning next year, the Hornets are one of the only teams that may be significantly under the cap. Tim Duncan can exercise an option to leave the Spurs if he wants to, as of next season. The Hornets are among the only teams in the NBA that could pay him.

Imagine a lineup:

Baron Davis
Courtney Alexander/David Wesley
Jamal Mashburn
Tim Duncan
Jamaal Magloire

Lynch, Haston, Traylor, Augmon, draft picks, and FA's off the bench. Around 17-20th draft pick will get a reliable backup big man, like David West (undersized, but tearing it up this year) or Brian Cook (not the paint-occupying presence of Duncan or Magloire, but a soft touch and nice range).

A thin bench, a monster starting lineup. Replace Campbell with Magloire, which should be completely feasible by next season, without seeing much dropoff except perhaps offensively. Replace PJ Brown with TIM DUNCAN, a similar old-fashioned player except extraordinarily better in every way.

If this team didn't win the East, I'd be utterly shocked.

This means letting Campbell and Brown both go, two loyal guys to the Hornets and valuable vets, but if it means getting Tim Duncan... very interesting. The team would instantaneously jump into the NBA Finals, and have a chance.

This is the single best idea I have ever heard. I think I would definitely buy season tickets the day that signing went down.
