On the first day teams were permitted to begin negotiations with free agents, the Hornets landed one of the biggest prizes, as small forward Peja Stojakovic agreed to sign a five-year, $64 million contract.
Stojakovic's agent, David Bauman, announced the agreement Saturday night during a conference call. Stojakovic, a three-time All-Star, opted out of his contract with the Indiana Pacers at the end of this past season to become an unrestricted free agent, and he rejected a reported four-year deal to remain with the team.
"Byron Scott absolutely helped close the deal here," Bauman said. "When Peja had some dark moments his first year in Sacramento when he came over from Greece, Byron was there to help him guide through that, and they have kept in touch over the years. The second component is that this is a young and exciting team, and having the Rookie of the Year in Chris Paul, somebody who knows how to penetrate and get the ball to the open man, that was something really intriguing to Peja."
