Hornets turn to Pargo in crunch...
Reserve guard proves to be solid option under pressure
After forward Peja Stojakovic hit a desperation 3-pointer and the Hornets narrowly reached an overtime period against the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night, a guard took over, scored the Hornets' first five points in overtime and propelled New Orleans to victory.
That guard, however, was probably not who most Hornets fans were expecting. It was Jannero Pargo, a 6-foot-1 reserve who typically plays behind point guard Chris Paul.
On Saturday night, Hornets Coach Byron Scott used Pargo and Paul, together with starters Tyson Chandler, David West and Stojakovic, for the full five minutes of overtime. That decision paid off, with Pargo and Paul accounting for nine of the Hornets' 10 overtime points in the 112-108 win.
"It was just something that I was thinking about," Scott said Monday about playing four starters with Pargo. "It was more of a hunch that game, but it's probably something that you will start seeing a little bit more."
In his second season with the Hornets, Pargo's minutes and statistics have varied greatly each night. He played 18 minutes and scored 11 points in the win against Dallas, and he scored 13 points in 18 minutes in a win at Atlanta the previous night. But in the four games before that, he averaged 3.8 points and 12 minutes.
Before that stretch, he started two games in place of an injured Paul, and he averaged 16.5 points and 36 minutes.
