Contract extension in works for Scott/Hornets, Scott agree to contract
Hornets coach could receive a deal among the league's six highest paid
When their playoff run ultimately ends, Hornets owner George Shinn plans to begin negotiations to extend Coach Byron Scott's contract.
After this season, Scott has only an option year remaining on his contract for the 2008-09 season. The Hornets have the choice to extend him the option year at his current estimated $4.2 million salary or offer an extension.
Although unlikely, Scott could opt out of his contract. However, he would have to pay the franchise an undisclosed amount, his business manager, Brian McInerney said. An NBA source said Scott would have to pay up to $2 million to opt out.
"We will begin negotiations when the season ends," Shinn said. "We have a tremendous team, and Coach has done a tremendous job. We have to keep everyone intact to keep this going."
Under Scott, the Hornets are enjoying one of their best seasons in franchise history. On Tuesday, also the day the Hornets eliminated the Dallas Mavericks from the first round of the playoffs, Scott received his first Red Auerbach Trophy as the NBA's Coach of the Year.
"Byron wants to stay with this team," said McInerney, who negotiated Scott's first deal with the Hornets in 2004 when he replaced former coach Tim Floyd.
"Everything is right, and the machine is running well. This has been a perfect fit. He's not thinking about any other thing except picking up another ring for Chris Paul, Peja Stojakovic and himself."

Shinn also mentioned in another article about busting his chops to re-sign CP this summer.

Re: Contract extension in works for Scott...
More on this....
NEW ORLEANS -- NBA coach of the year Byron Scott, who has the right to buy out the remainder of his contract and go to the highest bidder next season, showed little interest in leaving the Hornets on Wednesday.
"I expect to be here," Scott said. "In my mind right now I hope to be here unless something crazy happens."
The Hornets pay Scott about $3.5 million a year and the team's majority owner, George Shinn, said he intends to make a fair extension offer that would make Scott one of the highest paid coaches in the league.
"Byron has done an outstanding job for us," Shinn said. "I'm tired of flip-flopping and firing coaches. I want somebody to stay that I like. ... I'm not going to be stupid. I'll be as fair as I can to get him to stay with us."
When Scott took over as coach following the 2003-04 season, he was the Hornets' third coach in three seasons.
One of the most important things from this article...

Shinn said the team's top priority is a long-term extension for Paul, who would be a restricted free agent after next season. General manager Jeff Bower said the Hornets were well positioned to keep Paul because they've been preparing for it for several seasons.

Re: Contract extension in works for Scott...
I hope the organization can finally see that if they get a good staff together that can bring in top talent via the draft and free agency that they should pay them to keep them. Putting a good product on the floor is what is going to put the fans in the seats. That's going to make them more money. Keeping a guy like CP3 is going to help sell jerseys and eventually get other fans in other areas. Its a process that the Hornets have failed to capture since they've been in New Orleans (sometimes through no fault of their own ie. all those injuries we had with Baron, Mash, and Magloire.)
Open up the checkbook for the right guys and you'll get your payday Mr. Shinn.

Scott to decide on offer from Hornets
Hornets Coach Byron Scott will accept or reject the Hornets' latest extension offer today, but it appears he is leaning toward remaining with the franchise.
Scott is seeking a contract extension that will put him among the six highest-paid coaches in the league, but he might be willing to accept a shorter-term deal that would allow his annual base salary from the Hornets to fall in the category.
Under the current agreement, after the Hornets extend him an offer, Scott has seven days to reject or accept it.
Scott's agent, Brian McInerney, said the Hornets made their initial offer last Wednesday, so today is the seventh day. If Scott rejects the offer today, he would be allowed to enter contract discussions with other teams.
No offer has been finalized, but McInerney plans to arrive in New Orleans today to resume talks. Contract negotiations between Hornets General Manager Jeff Bower and McInerney have been ongoing since Thursday. They continued to have discussions by telephone during the Memorial Day weekend.
Scott arrived in Orlando, Fla., for the NBA Pre-Draft camp Tuesday with Bower to begin evaluating prospects for next month's draft.

Hornets, Scott agree to contract
Byron Scott agreed in principle on Wednesday to a two-year contract extension to remain as the Hornets' head coach.
Scott had until Wednesday to accept or reject the Hornets' latest extension offer and through his agent, Brian McInerney, he was leaning toward remaining with the franchise.
Scott's contract extension is expected to place him among the six highest-paid coaches in the league, estimated at nearly $6 million annually. The Hornets have scheduled a news conference to announce the agreement next Tuesday.

Odd that the extension is only for 2 years, he should have asked for more years. Unless he is hoping for a bigger payday for those 2 years.

I think 2 years is cool. Do good and you may get a chance to go back to the drawing board and end up awarded another extension. Start sucking and you're not tied into him for too long.

Re: Contract extension in works for Scott/Hornets, Scott agree to contract
Two years is good for the team per the reason you gave but as a coach who just came off winning COY I wouldn't take 2 years and would demand at least 4 or 5. Unless like I said he wants to cash in for more later.

Re: Contract extension in works for Scott/Hornets, Scott agree to contract
^^ Exactly. And while I'm pretty sure he's happy to have the COY accolade, he's also acknowledged the fact that you could be COY one year and then out of a job in the next 2 years. If the team does well, he knows he can renegotiate for a buttload more. I wonder what kinds of incentives the new contract may hold. The last one had incentives for advancing in the playoffs and earning a certain number of victories in the regular season.

I agree with your assessment, but I guess since he did so well this year some want to see him here long term. When he have one bad year, those same people (such as me) will be calling for his head. So, I guess this was a good option for both parties.

Yeah, you know how we are. Some were calling for his head earlier this season and I don't think the Hornets ever had a losing record at any point this season. This contract is still putting him up there with the higher paid coaches. He probably won't ever get to Phil Jackson's salary (unless he gets championships as a coach) but that's a pretty good salary nonetheless.

I do recall. Where can you find the coaches salary? I would like to see where he rank among other coaches.
