Knicks -- Amare (Some draft background)...
Link
Quote:
"A lot of teams were interested," insisted Wolf, who'd had only one previous NBA client, Dee Brown. "He didn't work out for many teams. Some teams were not conducive to high school kids (succeeding) — like the Knicks and the Clippers.
...
Stoudemire never worked out for the Warriors, only for the Rockets (who picked first), the Nuggets (fifth) and Suns (ninth). Wolf shielded him from the Cavaliers (sixth), the Knicks (seventh) and the Clippers (eighth).
...
After that, Denver opted for Nikoloz Tskitishvili, the Cavaliers picked Dajuan Wagner, the Knicks got Nene (and eventually traded him to the Nuggets), and the Clippers plucked Chris Wilcox.

Now without McDyess there is no Marbury, and it would be a different team, but it's interesting too look back and answer why sometimes.
Why would they not let the kid try out for the Knicks?

Probably because they didn't think Amare would get a good shot as a 4th string PF in a big city with lots of pressure. They wanted to avoid a Jermaine O'Neal/Darko Milicic situation.

At the time, what was the PF situation? There was no Sweetney, no McDyess...

Petey, poetry kmows the truth..hes just protecting layden..layden was not interested in high schoolers going pro and decided to layden to gamble and lost..
if i am not mistaken that was the same year layden never got ahold of LJ and never found out he was retiring..
there were no other power fowards..Camby was it,unless you think KT is better than Amare
That move was the nail in the coffin

thing is that not ONLY did they trade nene and camby for dice but you seem to forget that they did acquire a second round pick in return with the mcdyess trade. Must i really remind you who that second round pick was? Well if you guessed Maciej Lampe you'd be right.

Who then they shipped to PHX for Marbury.
We already said there would be no Marbury trade if they picked up Amare.

Re: Knicks -- Amare (Some draft background)...
They also dunped Mark Jackson and picked up Frank Williams in the trade, but nobody seems to remember that.
McDyess put up 20/10 in the preseason before his knee gave out of nowhere. Amare is a younger McDyess, but let's get real, nobody thought Amare would be Amare, otherwise he would have been taken 2nd, not 9th.
The Knicks had all the players that were playing in front of Sweetney: Thomas, Weatherspoon, Harrington, and Camby (if he wasn't traded for McDyess).

Well as the article said, he didn't work out for many teams, if he had, don't you think he would have went higher?
