More Changes, Same Knicks Defense

But the Knicks' deals could create more problems than they solved. The Knicks added a big contract for Rose, who is owed $27.3 million over the remaining four years.

The trades also left the Knicks with an abundance of small forwards and without a true center, and they acquired what are sure to be late-first-round draft picks that may not yield much.

So instead of solving a problem, Isiah Thomas may have created more by acquiring a pair of power forwards with long-term contracts. The deals for San Antonio's Malik Rose and Houston's Maurice Taylor go against what the front office had been preaching for weeks - that the Knicks were no longer in the business of trading for marginal players with bloated contracts.

Team president Isiah Thomas, never one to stand on the sidelines, picked up Malik Rose, Maurice Taylor and two late first-round picks in trades with Houston and San Antonio. Suffice it to say, those deals had decidedly less sex appeal than a trade for Webber. In fact, it's hard to ascertain exactly what kind of appeal they did have except to say that the Knicks are definitely not looking to go anywhere this season or likely next.
