Training Camp Notes
Quote:
Charleston, SC, October 4, 2005 -- New York opened training camp on Tuesday at the College of Charleston (S.C.). The Knicks will hold training sessions from Oct. 4-12 at John Kresse Arena.
Veteran players Anfernee Hardaway and Allan Houston talked about the excitement surrounding the opening of camp.
“It feels good to open training camp,” said Hardaway, now in his 3rd season with the Knicks and 13th overall in the NBA. “This is a big training camp for our team because we have a new coaching staff and new players. We want to get that swagger back that the Knicks have always had.”

Charleston, SC, October 5, 2005 -- Following Wednesday morning’s practice session at the College of Charleston, Head Coach Larry Brown talked about the trade with the Chicago Bulls that brought Eddy Curryand Antonio Davis to the Knicks.
"I'm excited about the trade," said Brown. "I loved Timmy (Thomas) and I was looking forward to coaching him and Michael (Sweetney) but, now that they're are not here and having Eddy (Curry) and Tony (Antonio Davis) added to this team is exciting.

1. The Bigs Will Run: Jerome James and Eddy Curry had better get in shape, because they're going to be doing a lot of 94-foot sprints this year. Under Larry Brown's system, the center has to race down the court, in both directions.
I want them in front of the ball like Dave Cowens used to be and Buck [Williams] used to be," said Brown.
That's an adjustment for James, who could run up the court at a more leisurely pace in Seattle.
"In Seattle I was a screening center," said James. "I'd come down and set a pick for Rashard Lewis. [Brown] wants the big guys down there first, getting early position."

Re: Training Camp Notes
Oh if Larry wants speed from his bigs he will be picking on Eddy and James quite a bit. DO NOT be surprised if he falls in love with one of the rookies either frye or lee.

Charleston, SC, October 7, 2005 – The Eddy Curry era as a New York Knick began Friday night at the team’s training camp at the College of Charleston.
In fact, it officially started at 6:58 p.m., just moments after the NBA reviewed the Knicks’ medical team’s findings and cleared Curry to practice with his new team.

Larry brown is notoriously reluctant to play rookies and why on earth would he have traded for eddy curry just to play go and play frye??

Re: Training Camp Notes
Quote:
October 11, 2005 -- CHARLESTON — The basketball class known as "Larry Brown 101" took on its harshest tone during Day 7 of Knicks training camp at the College of Charleston yesterday.
Perhaps sensing the exhibition opener nearing (the tip-off is Saturday against the Nets in Bridgeport), Brown gave the Knicks a verbal butt-kicking yesterday during their first extended 5-on-5 scrimmage.
All week, it has been evident how often Brown stops play to point out the tiniest mistake. But yesterday, Brown used his strongest language.
After three straight botched possessions, Brown ranted: "We're not doing anything we've talked about for six days. Not one guy made a cut. We're shooting [bleepy] shots every time down the court."
Later on, Brown got angry at rookie point guard Nate Robinson for gambling on a steal after he bricked a shot.
"You compounded a bad shot by making a dumb play out here," Brown railed. And when Stephon Marbury passed to center Jackie Butler on the left wing, Brown stopped action, asking him pointedly why he passed when he had a clear path to drive. Marbury tried to explain, but Brown cut him off.

Kitty you try not going insane at a Larry Brown practice. I could just imagine all the painkillers that Steph must be on right now. I am SOO happy we finally have a coach who wont take any **** from these guys. Better than Lenny " I cry You cry" Wilkens and that moron we had after gumby left I FORGOT HIS NAME.

October 13, 2005
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Nine days is the longest training camp Knicks coach Larry Brown can remember having with any of the nine pro teams he's coached.
The past three Knicks training camps run by former coaches Don Chaney and Lenny Wilkens were a veritable picnic compared with the relentless drills Brown put them through.
As a veteran of past camps under San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich, a Brown disciple, power forward Malik Rose was used to the work ethic. But nine days of banging left him shaking his head.
"We'll have to see the benefits later," Rose said. "I thank God nobody got hurt or seriously injured. I think we got better, too. It was very hard, very physically demanding, but maybe Coach meant to do that for a reason."
Point guard Stephon Marbury has to get used to playing without the ball more as Brown nudges him toward more of a shooting guard role, and shooting guard Jamal Crawford has to reel in his tendency to launch long shots and learn to handle the ball more and look for the open man under the basket. Both seemed to take Brown's demands in stride.

Can someone pass Rose a tissue so he can wipe his eyes? Quit crying and suck it up.

GREENBURGH, NY, October 14, 2005 -- As the saying goes, the devil is in the details. More often than not, so is winning
Taking advantage of Stephon Marbury (day-to-day with a skin infection) not working out, neophyte point guard Nate Robinson -- constantly airborne, constantly making plays -- was clearly the engine out there. “The kid can fly,” Brown smiled. (In more ways than one: the 5-9 Robinson dunked without any visible effort at the end of a breakaway.) Jamal Crawford, paid special attention by Brown and clearly relishing it, was another standout as was -- in something of a surprise -- a beyond-bouncy Penny Hardaway. “I’ve been in the league, what, twelve years now,” he said. “But I’m absorbing a lot. I swear Coach Brown is teaching me a brand new way to play both offense and defense. It’s awesome.”
And awesomely detailed as well. “Every day I learn something,” Frye practically shouts from excitement. “How to play a man over a screen, which is the right way to roll, keeping a proper base. Step up on the screen, step into the passing lane …Stuff I already knew but now it’s done differently, in the right fashion. And overall, it’s like there is a certain new way to think about the game. Dude, I’m telling you, this year we’ll probably have our bumps and bruises at first -- but we’re all getting miles better.”

Whatever rebounding and defensive questions might follow the personable young center, he has the answers: “Just keep moving, keep getting in better shape, and keep listening to Coach Brown,” says Curry. “I feel that if I do that I will improve tremendously -- and the New York Knicks are going to have a great year.”
