Isiah Still Counting On Jackie Butler To Return
Quote:
Jackie Butler is not with the Knicks' summer-league team, but Isiah Thomas said yesterday he expects the free-agent center to be with the club in October at training camp in Charleston, S.C.
The Knicks have extended a $1 million qualifying offer to the 6-10 center, but his agent, Keith Glass, believes he will get a larger offer from one of four teams. However, the Knicks can match, and sources within the club said they plan to, within reason.
"We like Jackie, we want to keep him, but it's a long summer," Thomas said. "Our intention is to re-sign him."
Thomas said he wanted Butler to play summer league but understood the risk of him getting injured. Butler is perfect insurance in case Jerome James reports out of shape again. And Butler's presence could prod James. Meanwhile, the Bulls are monitoring the situation since they are looking for a low-post scorer.

Looks like Isiah received the green light to open up Dolan's checkbook.

I mean, I'd rather Butler over James, but we can't move James. He's gotta play. I say forget about Butler. No sense in going crazy to sign him and add payroll if he's gonna sit on the bench.

I agree, I don't really see the need for Butler when James was barely playing. When it comes down to garbage minutes, you at least have to give James those because of his deal. You look like an idiot having this guy on the roster just twiddling his fingers all night.

Butler's worth is measured in the non-garbage minutes though. He's the 'comeback squad' center, while James is barely worth giving garbage minutes to. Having a waste of contract sitting on the end of the bench shouldn't be allowed to interfere with re-signing the guy who's moved ahead on the depth chart.

I guess, but then do you just let James rot?

A buy-out would be best. It's no doubt that no other team will want him with his contract. Possibly a waiver if nothing else.

But we'd just be wasting money.

That money is long since wasted. The day that contract was signed, that money might as well have been burned.

I guess I just don't see what's so great about Butler. I mean he's def. more valuable than James because of his youth but what the hell did he show you last year that makes you think he's so great? He's like a rich man's Robert Traylor.

I agree. James is getting paid anyways, might as well make him earn it. Or something more than warming the bench. I doubt James is gonna get bought-out. If he does, then it obviously a good idea to re-sign Butler. But James is staying, and might as well make him play.

Re: Isiah Still Counting On Jackie Butler To Return
The fact that the Spurs were willing to sign Butler to 3yrs 7mill is what's valuable about him; in other words, he's a great trading chip at the very least--GMs love to project fantasy onto young big men and here's one who actually hasn't embarrassed himself in limited minutes despite having no college experience behind him. I say match the offer, have him backup both C and PF for about 10-12 min. a night, and package him w/an expiring contract in Feb. for something we need.

I gotta admit, that's a great point.
