One player who continues to draw interest from the Knicks is Washington forward Jared Jeffries, a restricted free agent. According to sources, the Knicks have had conversations with Jeffries' agent, Andy Miller, in recent days as negotiations between Jeffries and the Wizards have stalled. Jeffries is considering accepting Washington's one-year qualifying offer for approximately $3 million, which would make him an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Miller, who also represents free agent forward Al Harrington, did not return phone calls yesterday.

The Knicks can offer Jeffries their mid-level exception, starting at approximately $5.2 million. The Knicks are reluctant to add salary, but the 6-11 Jeffries, who can play four positions, would give the team a versatile player who is regarded as a strong defender. The 24-year-old Jeffries averaged 6.4 points and 4.9 rebounds in 77 games last season.

The Knicks' interest in Jeffries suggests that Thomas will not match the three-year, $7 million offer Jackie Butler received from the San Antonio Spurs. The Knicks have until tomorrow to decide on Butler's fate. By allowing Butler to leave, the Knicks would have one roster spot available.

Washington would have the option to match any offer made to Jeffries. A sign-and-trade scenario is unlikely because of salary cap restrictions. Jeffries is best suited to play small forward, a position that is currently filled by Jalen Rose, Quentin Richardson and first-round pick Renaldo Balkman. David Lee is another option for small forward. Jeffries, however, can play both forward positions as well as center and has even played big guard for Washington.

Butler has far more upside than Jeffries. I know which one I'd rather have.

I love Jefferies game. With the glut of players we have, I feel it's best we look for sign and trades such as this one to utilize the depth advantageously for a player that's clearly an upgrade for this team. As the article mentioned, he's extremely versatile but primarily known as a defender. I along with a people couple who are fimilar with his game believe that he has the potential to be MUCH better than what he is now, since he's had to curtail his game to fill a role for the team. He reminds me of a more athletic Shane Battier. The question now is, how would we put together a trade to acquire him? I know the Wizards are unsatisfied with Brendan Haywood and would like to play Jamison at the 3 more often. I also heard that the Wizards want to move Antonio Daniels' contract and possibly Jarvis Hayes whose become redundant with the team.

..I was halfway through making a trade (involving Jeffries and Daniels) when I realised - who on the Knicks could they want?
Frye and Lee? Don't see Knicks giving up Frye.. Sweetney and Rose are both overpaid and not that good.. Q Rich could be aight, he n Caron Butler can both play either swing position.

Eww, don't take Jeffries above 2M. He's an overrated defender and a below average shooter. He still looks like a deer in the headlights out there sometimes. I would want no part of him.

I agree, I also believe Jeffries can become better than he is now. If getting him means we give up Lee or Frye, then nevermind. Aquiring him would be pretty hard with our contracts.

jeffries seems to be defense minded so yea i would love him....

If we can get him for the MLE, do it!

He's much more valuable than Butler. This is a guy (6'11"?) who can theoretically play 3 positions. He plays D, he's long, he hustles, and he's not old (25). It makes way more sense to sign Jeffries than Butler who is going to share back up minutes with J.James.

Boy, I didn't know we could trade players we didn't have, what a nice option! Sweetney was never overpaid. He wasn't athletic, but that kid can score in the post and is willing to work hard. Too bad we have no playing time for the kid at the 4 spot. Nevertheless, Jeffries has an ok-game, but I don't know how exactly he'll fit in to our system. However, I'd still like for Ariza to sign back with us, that'd be pretty nice.
