Eddy Curry and family robbed at gunpoint.
Quote:
Former Bull Eddy Curry was robbed at gunpoint early this morning at his home in southwest suburban Burr Ridge, police said.
The 6-foot-11-inch center, who currently plays for the New York Knicks, some family members and an employee of his were restrained with duct tape and held at gunpoint by three masked robbers, Burr Ridge police said.
No one was hurt, but the robbers fled the scene with cash and jewelry.
"We [are] aware of the situation and are very thankful that Eddy Curry and his family are safe. He told us it was a traumatic experience. At this time we are aware that the local authorities are handling the situation," said a statement from the Knicks, quoted on the Web site of WNBC-Ch. 4, New York's NBC television affiliate.
"At this point in the investigation, information leads us to believe that this was not a random incident," Burr Ridge police said in a statement.
They declined to release further details this afternoon.
The incident comes nearly three weeks after Miami Heat star and Chicago native Antoine Walker was robbed at gunpoint at his $4.1 million home in Chicago's River North neighborhood.
Like Curry, the 6-foot-9-inch forward was tied up with duct tape by masked intruders, and robbed of jewelry and cash. Walker's black Mercedes was also stolen, but later found.
Chosen 4th overall by the Bulls in the 2001 NBA draft, Curry led the league in field goal percentage during his second season, becoming the first Bull to lead the league in a major statistical category since Michael Jordan led in scoring in 1998.
Curry, now 24, led the Bulls in scoring during the 2004-2005 season, helping the team surge to its first playoff berth since 1998.
But he missed the 2005 playoffs after being diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat. He was traded to the Knicks later that year after refusing to submit to a DNA test to determine whether he had a heart ailment.
He averaged 13.6 points per game for the Knicks during the 2005-2006 season, before improving to 19.5 points per game last season.
A Calumet City native, Curry was touted as one of the top high school basketball players in the country while a senior at Thornwood High School in South Holland. In 2001, he led Thornwood to a second place finish in the IHSA AA boy's basketball playoffs and was named Illinois Mr. Basketball—which honors the top high school player in the state.
