Curry Annoyed At Rough Play By Opposing Centers
Quote:
Eddy Curry is roughly the size of a minivan, with high-tops instead of tires. And when you're that big, no one wants to hear you complain about being picked on.
But Curry believes enough is enough. Like Shaquille O'Neal before him, the Knicks' center continues to lash out at what he feels is a double standard in the NBA: the bigger you are, the more you get hit and hit hard.
"I just feel like it's getting old," he said. "I'm not going to let nobody disrespect me out there."
Curry and New Jersey center Jamaal Magloire exchanged shoves as well as a few choice words during the Nets' preseason win on Thursday. Curry and Knicks coach Isiah Thomas have complained for the past two years that Curry is a victim of minor assaults every time he takes the floor. Because of Curry's size (6-11, 285 pounds) and strength, it takes a lot to prevent him from scoring when he is under the basket, which usually leads to excessive punishment.
O'Neal has voiced similar concerns for years, saying that most of the fouls against him fall under the category of flagrant. Houston's Yao Ming is another player who absorbs more punishment than most.
"Every time I get fouled hard, I have a legitimate reason to turn around and punch you in the face," O'Neal once said. "I could do that. You're playing dirty. I don't know what your coach told you to do, but that's not only a foul, that's a dirty play. You hit me in the head."
Curry's propensity for drawing fouls, albeit hard ones, does have its advantages. The Knicks attempted 2,396 free throws last season, fifth most in the league. Curry's 659 attempts represented a career high.
"It's all about getting your point across," Curry said. "I think Shaq's at the point where nobody wants to hit him anywhere. A lot of people want to hit Yao, a lot of people want to hit Dwight (Howard). Hopefully we can get out of this by preseason, guys not putting their hands on me. But if they don't then I've just got to get them off me."
Curry hinted that if the league can't police any hand-to-hand combat in the post, then he will have no choice but to protect himself.
"I'm not a bully," Curry said. "I don't go out there just picking on people. If I pushed somebody it's because I got pushed first.
"Eventually I'll get the respect and they won't be able to do that. I have to play through it."

It's just a matter of time before Curry is suspended for fighting because he will probably get bonked over the head a couple of more times during the duration of the season.

he may need to get suspended to get the refs to protect him, but i actually doubt he gets more than a couple of techs for shoving this season.

Re: Curry Annoyed At Rough Play By Opposing Centers
I understand what curry's saying but curry and shaq both need to understand they get alot of the benefit of the doubt on offense for being big guys. For example, how many times do you see a switch happen where a 6-4 guard is guarding a 6-11 200+ lbs C/PF. The C/PF puts a shoulder into him, he goes flying into the 1st row and an offensive foul is called. On the other hand, curry and shaq are so much bigger and stronger than the guys guarding them and send the defender flying after putting a shoulder into them. that should be a charge EVERY time but alot of times refs don't call it because they give the bigger stronger player the benefit of the doubt.

I wonder how Allen Iverson would respond to Curry whining about being hit...
