The Season in Retrospect
The season thus far has been a complete disaster; so much so that even a diehard Knick fan such as myself has lost interest in following the games and supporting Isiah Thomas. ThereŽs little that we can do now and that may be one of the best things to happen to us in a long time because we WILL be getting a high draft pick and it WILL force DolanŽs hand to clean ship and bring in a Donnie Walsh or Brian Colangelo (donŽt mind Isiah remaining as a scout for drafts but not as GM and definately not as coach). I feel that there wonŽt be many if any objecting to this. IŽm just curious to see though what people would have done differently this offseason if they had been given the opportunity.
The first thing I would have done would be to try my best to getting into the lottery. Its clear that this team isnŽt ready to win now so it would have made more sense to put the pieces in place to do so in the future. I would have explored something along the lines of:
Knicks Trade (to Golden State):
Jamal Crawford...SG
David Lee...F
Jerome James...C
Lorenzon Wright...C
Knicks Recieve:
Adonal Foyle...C
8th pick
18th pick (from Golden State)
Warriors Trade:
Jason Richardson...SG
Adonal Foyle...C
18th pick
Warriors Recieve:
Jamal Crawford...G
David Lee...F
Jerome James...C
Bobcats Trade:
8th Pick
$8 million trade exception
Bobcats Recieve:
Jason Richardson...SG
I think the Warriors would value Jamal and David much more than who they have now in Brandon Wright. They would help power there bench attack which is strong but would be one of the best in the league with those two. Is there any doubt those guys would look like all-stars in that uptempo offense? The Bobcats would get who they got anyway so they shouldnŽt have any objections.
IŽd follow that move up with...
Knicks Trade (to Hawks):
Stephon Marbury...PG
Channing Frye...F/C
Nate Robinson...PG
23rd pick
Knicks Recieve:
Anthony Johnson...PG
Speedy Claxton...PG
Josh Childress...SF
Lorenzon Wright...C
3rd pick
The Hawks did not seem to place much worth in the 3rd pick having shopped it before the draft. As of right now, they place little to no importance in Anthony Johnson and Speedy Claxton and seldom used Josh Childress until fairly recently. The way IŽd look at it is them giving up little they value. In return they get a guy that was a local college product with Stephon Marbury whose drive and kick game would work wonders on a team of perimeter jump shooters. HeŽd fill the void of the veteran player Joe Johnson had been craving for (remember that up until recently that Marbury had cleaned up his image and supposedly became a team player). Channing Frye would give them the center they lack and still want with an inside outside game while Nate would be one of the better 6th men in the league.
The difference in salaries would give us another $8 million trade exception. With that IŽd look to trade for Kurt Thomas (a Sun at the time), the 24th and 29th pick (both from the Suns). IŽd look to trade up from the 8th pick using both that and the 18th pick from Golden State to Memphis for the 4th pick.
With the 3rd pick in the draft IŽd select Mike Conley Jr., the 4th pick Al Horford and the 24th pick Wilson Chandler; the 29th pick I would have given to Utah since we still owe them a draft pick from the Marbury trade and may be giving away a very high pick reluctantly if we donŽt take care of this debt . I believe these three players would help to form the future of our supporting cast around Eddy Curry, the foundation of our offense. We wouldnŽt be the Boston Celtics of the league but weŽd be in a nice situation for the future.
To fill out the team IŽd look to make minor moves for players like Earl Watson, Jarvis Hayes and Ime Udoka. Mardy Collins, Speedy Claxton and Kelvin Cato for Earl, a 2nd round draft pick for the bird rights to Ime Udoka and a fraction of our trade exceptions to secure Jarvis HayesŽ bird rights. Maybe even Larry Hughes for Quentin Richardson, Malik Rose and Demetris Nichols. HeŽd be a perfect fit in our offense.
Starters:
Earl Watson...PG
Larry Hughes...SG
Josh Childress...SF
Al Horford...PF
Eddy Curry...C
Rotation Players:
Mike Conley Jr....PG
Jarvis Hayes...SG
Ronaldo Balkman...F
Kurt Thomas...F/C
Adonal Foyle...C
Bench:
Anthony Johnson...PG
Ime Udoka...SG
Wilson Chandler...SF
Jared Jefferies...F
Randolph Morris...C

Re: The Season in Retrospect
P.S., I´d look to hire Stan Van Gundy as the coach. The man knows how to run a basketball team and had experience running a similarly constructed team with the Heat. Defense would be the identity of the team and he´d be sure to harness that. On the offense end, I think we´d have some pretty good shooters, long range and mid range, to captilize one the spacing Eddy provides. I think the ball movement would be excellent as well since most of the backcourt players on the team played in uptempo offenses and have experience sharing the ball and moving without the ball.

Reread the post. The a majority of the trades are not possible now because they have happened with other teams. ItŽs a hypothetical discussion of what we could have done last offseason.

Re: The Season in Retrospect
I suggest that NY should try to trade Zach and QRich (or even Crawford) to Cleveland for Larry Hughes and Drew Gooden. Both are good defenders and Knicks would save some money...

No. Crap is still crap regardless of whether it's the Knicks' crap or the Cavaliers' crap.

I disagree considering that both Hughes and Gooden have been productive players both with the Cavs and other teams.
