Mark Jackson as Head Coach, JVG as his #1 assistant

Frank Isola, the Daily News Knick Beat guy, said he wouldnt be surprised if this happened.......if it did, it'd be freaking hilarious.

It should definitely be the other way around.

Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy don't get along. This could not happen.

JVG is not going to take an assistant coaching job, I don't see it happening.

Why would anyone want JVG?

The guy is a terrible coach. Yeah, the players like him but his style of offense is incredibly obsolete in today's game. Plus, he's a quitter.

I wanted Coach JVG FIRED in the 1997-98 season.
And when he benched Spree & Camby in the 1998-99 season, I was at the Garden yelling for JVG head on a stick. I was glad when G.M. Ernie Grunfield got mad as hell over him benching Camby & Spree and punched JVG in the face, but sad when he got FIRED for it.

Mark Jackson never got along with JVG or Oakley.
They both new diddly squat about offense, but pretented like that did.
JVG inhereted Coach Pat Riley Knick roster that went to the FINALS, but so many Knick fans give JVG coaching credit untill they seen him coach Houston.
The first thing that comes to my mind when someone mention "Charles Oakley" is that Coach Phil Jax and Jordan would have never WON a Championship Trophy with Charles Oakley still in a Chicago Bulls uniform.

Knick-Fans could LUV Oakley all they want, but I would've rather kept the Twin Towers of "Bill Cartwright & Patrick Ewing" with rookie Mark Jackson running the show.
The Knicks even refuse to resign SF-Bernard King whom signed with the next team to have two decent well performance seasons, and would've been a great fit inside the young PG-Mark Jackson playmaking with the Twin Towers.
The Oakley trade gave the Chicago Bulls 3 straight Championship Rings.

PF-Anthony Mason was a much better & quicker hustling player than Oakley.
Mason was the Force that helped Pat Riley get Ewing to the Finals.
If the Oakley trade was never made I'm sure that Ewing would have accepted the CBA player Anthony Mason as his Strong-Foward.
With Oakley on the Knicks Ewing rebelled at all the PF that took Oakley's playingtime. However, Coach Pat Riley & Coach Don Nelson did not care how much Ewing cried and rebelled about Oakley playingtime being reduced to under 20 mpg.

Everyone in the Knick organization knew what was stopping Ewing from winning a Championship Ring except Ewing LUV for Oakley.
The Knicks organization was paying top money at getting PF after PF after PF to go alongside of Ewing.
But Ewing refuse to co-exist with any of the PF that the Knicks got.
So G.M. Ernie Grunfield did the best thing when he traded Charles Oakley in the offseason for PF-Camby, and signed PF-Kurt Thomas.
One season without Oakley made Patrick Ewing demand to be traded the next offseason.
The Frontcourt Players that took the Knicks to their last FINALS were C-Herb Williams, PF-Larry Johnson, PF-Camby, and PF-Kurt Thomas.

Is it really true that Grunfeld was relieved of his duties for assaulting Van Gundy? Or was this speculation on your part? I've watched the Knicks for lord knows how many years and never heard of this before.

In the 1998 offseason G.M. Ernie Grunfield traded John Starks for Sprewell, and Charles Oakley for Marcus Camby, and signed Kurt Thomas to the MLE.
Coach JVG and Ewing did not agree with their close friends being traded (Starks & Oakley) to the next tean and it showed by coach JVG benching Spree & Camby throughout the season.
The Knicks were losing twice as many games as they were winning.
There was no hope in the Knicks making the 1999 playoffs at the rate they were playing at.
It made G.M. Ernie Grunfield look bad for trading for a player that choked his coach, and a soft player that kept getting injured.
There were two games the Knicks were winning tremendously in the first half with the use of Spree, Camby, and Kurt Thomas, the Knicks loss both games because coach JVG did not play Spree, Camby, and Kurt in none of the 2nd half of those games. Which made G.M. Ernie Grunfield meet up with Coach JVG at the Practice Facility expressing himself very physically rather than verbally.
G.M. Ernie Grunfield was FIRED on the spot.

Owner Dolan and the Knick Brass came to every home/away Knick game after the firing of Grundfield. Coach JVG was going to be FIRED as soon as the season was over.
JVG then started giving the lineup of PG-Childs, SG-Houston, SF-Spree, PF-Camby, and Ewing all 32 mpg and Won 15 out of the next 18 games. The Knicks made the 8th seed of the Postseason. And took it all the way to the FINALS.
The first round 8th seed vs the number 1 seed team.
Allan Houston Winning shot over the Miami Heat, plus average 21 for the series, over Miami whom everyone gave the 1999 Championship to that year, is the reason why Allan Houston got that tremendous contract that offseason and Ewing demanding and forcing to be traded did not help matters.

Re: Mark Jackson as Head Coach, JVG as his #1 assistant

Coach JVG was Pat Riley Defensive coach in New York.
The same as Coach Tom Thibodeau was Don Chaney defensive coach in New York, and is Doc River defensive coach now in Boston.

When Walsh sign Mark Jackson as the Knicks Head Coach, he should go after Tom Thibodeau, before thinking about a JVG or Clyde. He should also do the same about getting a Bigman coach in getting the Kings Person, rather than Ewing, Oakley, and Herb.
