Kenny Smith enters Knicks' radar as GM candidate
Kenny Smith enters Knicks' radar
Quote:
According to a league source, Smith is scheduled to interview this week with Knicks president Donnie Walsh about becoming the team's new general manager. Smith has no previous front-office experience, but for years has expressed a desire to run a club.
Smith, who attended Archbishop Molloy High School in Queens and like Walsh is a graduate of North Carolina, has been more visible around Madison Square Garden in recent years while working as a part-time analyst on MSG Network, and has a close relationship with Garden president Steve Mills. Smith's main job is as an analyst on TNT's popular studio show, having worked alongside Charles Barkley and Ernie Johnson since 1998.
Smith will be one of many candidates interviewed for the position currently held by Glen Grunwald, who was hired by Isiah Thomas. Former Sixers GM Billy King and former Pistons and Sonics GM Rick Sund are both expected to meet with Walsh, who is not ruling out retaining Grunwald.

This team is still a joke.

A) They can't break up the TNT Crew
B) Maybe they should assign turning around this mess to a real GM with experience, and not a name.

Re: Kenny Smith enters Knicks' radar as GM candidate
Not Kenny Smith, Walsh wtf are you thinking? Smith should stick to being on TNT, he is great there. As for Mills, I guess he didn't learn after going for a "name" last time. I'm sure Mills is telling Walsh to make Smith a candidate, and like an idiot he is going to give him an interview.

Why NOT Kenny Smith and Mark Jackson?
Listening to some very well respected people gush about Jackson's qualities, I'd have no compunction about hiring him. He's smart, strong, demands respect, and is a no-nonsense guy. Whether or not you like KS on TNT, there is no doubt he is extremely bright and knows what it takes to put a team together. If he has a grip of the subtleties of the position regarding the cap, etc., I see no reason to not consider him. Everybody is a rookie at it at one time. Either you have it, or you don't. Walsh knows what he is doing.

Re: Kenny Smith enters Knicks' radar as GM candidate
I'm sure he wouldn't be a total disaster. He'd probably make a trade or two then play it safe,, kinda like Steve Kerr for the Suns. I kinda wanna see what happens
But yea, this is pretty out of nowhere lol.. And don't break up the TNT crew..

Well, I don't think I would trust Kenny during draft time though. Does anyone remember what he said when Balkman was drafted??

Re: Kenny Smith enters Knicks' radar as GM candidate
i hate to see kenny leave the TNT trio. NBA on TNT and Inside the NBA has been one of the bright spots about the nba in recent times. the chemistry of the jet, chuck, and ej is just awesome and they've got numerous awards to back that up.

Re: Kenny Smith enters Knicks' radar as GM candidate
I'm with you guys about not breaking up the TNT crew. They are damn good.
But Kenny really seems like someone who has his head on straight.
Do you guys know who all is in consideration for the job?

Re: Kenny Smith enters Knicks' radar as GM candidate
its looks like donnie wants to sign a name GM and head coach to bring the team back to respectability. it makes sense, but I see it taking a few year. if he wants to hire the jet thats fine. just promote herb williams and develop the team for a year or two...pay off thomas...then you can start spending money in the front office again.
