Knicks ink Vranes

NEW YORK, July 23, 2003 - New York Knickerbockers President and General Manager Scott Layden announced today that second-round draft choice Slavko Vranes had been signed to a contract with the team and released from his contract with Buducnost in Serbia & Montenegro. The 7-5, 260-pound center is participating in the team’s entry at the Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue from July 21-26 in Salt Lake City, UT and appeared in six games at the Reebok Pro Summer League from July 14-20, in Boston, MA. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Vranes, 20, became the 39th overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft and had been a member of top European teams, including FMP Zeleznik (Serbia & Montenegro), Efes Pilsen (Turkey) and Buducnost (Serbia & Montenegro).

Thumbs up

Good news. Lets get this big guy on the roster and working with Willis Reed and Herb Williams. 7-5 260, he is worth a spot on the roster and maybe he can develop into a backup big man who can grab some boards and block shots al-a Chris Dudley. And maybe he will have a better offensive game than Dudley.

I would rather have seen Pachulia or Badiane picked at 39, but I'm still glad Vranes is signed and delivered.

Let's see what the big guy can turn into.
