Did You Go to the School You Support?

Just a question to all the posters...did you attend/graduate from the school you support here? If not, what is your affiliation or reason for fandom?

I did my undergrad at a D-III school and until I got to Bonas for grad school, the only basketball games I had been to were some HS girls playoff games (the star of that team later went to Xavier and briefly the WNBA) so I wasn't well versed. Even in the depths of the Solomon teams, I still caught the spirit of the Bonnies and have been a season ticket holder for 7 years now.

Apologies if this has been discussed before, I was just curious.

There's a reason Mateer has that handle. They were tight during those 5 years. Mateer (the fake one) has an excellent story about a fundraising call from Mateer (the real one) after graduation.

I graduated from UR. Went to all the games when I was in school, followed them as best as possible in the CAA years following graduation but it was really the move to the A10 that upped my level of interest significantly.

I went to a D-III school that didn't care about sports. I got into the A-10 because my brother went to URI. After graduating undergrad, I went to work at Bona's and now work at La Salle (not in athletics at either place). I got my masters' at Bona's, so they'll always be my favorite.

My dad went to X for his MBA. He got season tickets right when Cintas opened and I have been going to games ever since, although my earliest memories are of Maurice Mcafee and Kevin Frey. I was accepted into Xavier but I wanted to do some type of engineering in school so narrowed it down to UC, OSU, and Miami (OH). I ended up going to Miami (even though it was the worst of the three for engineering) but never once thought about rooting for them over X. I am now a Senior at Miami and haven't really developed any rooting interests for their sports teams in my time here. They don't have a very good basketball or football team. Great hockey team but I'm not really into hockey. A lot of times I wish I went to a school with a big time basketball or football team. Ironically I didn't stick with engineering so I could have gone to Xavier.

I loved UMass so much I attended (off and on) for 6.5 years, from 1977-1984. If I recall correctly UMass87 has me beat in the longevity department though.

I got to see rock bottom, the Ray Wilson years, and it wasn't pretty. The Cage back then made the Mullin Center today look like Cameron Indoor Stadium. Although by the time Tom McLaughlin came along the place was rocking again, which is probably the main reason why I'm still a college BB fan.

It's funny, the paths we take. I ultimately graduated with a BS in Computer Science, but I started out as a Forestry major. And UMass was not my first choice. The University of Idaho was. Followed by Maine-Orono. UMass was third. I was accepted by all 3, but I was mostly paying my own way and couldn't afford the first two. And way back then a full year at UMA, including room and board was less than 3K and they were also giving me Pell Grants that covered almost half of that. It was still a bit of cash back then, but compared to what it cost now, I don't think we'll see too many kids doing like I did.

Attended Charlotte from 2007-2011 when I graduated with BA's in History and Criminal Justice.

Fell in love on the night of the Leemire Goldwire - Steph Curry shootout my freshman year, which we won. Sadly, that season was the best of my four years, 20-11 with a blow out loss to Nebraska in the first round of the NIT and we got progressively worse from there. The way I see it, I survived the worst of it and we can only get better from here.

I was considering Ohio State, Miami (OH) and Xavier in no particular order until my parents suggested that I "strongly consider" a Jesuit education. Went down for a weekend to visit my brother, who was a soph at the time and had a blast.

Seven years later, with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell (dating myself) sandwiched in the middle of the two degrees for one year, I left X with a BSBA and MBA.

Nope, I went to Dayton's 'Harvard by the Highway'. I'll see if any Dayton resident can figure that one out. Graduated in 2007. If I had listened to my parents, I would have ended up at Bowling Green, loved that school. Those kids know a good time.

My allegiance to UD stems from when my mom remarried when I was younger. Although my dad liked them, we never went to any games. My stepdad had tickets and took us when I was like 9. That was in 1982 or '83. I remember walking in and seeing this huge arena. The biggest one I had seen to that point was Riverfront, but this was inside with a roof! So that was the start of my Flyer fanship.

What really cemented the rivalry for X with me was the 1990 MCC Championship game my junior year of high school. We tailgated in the parking lot like it was a football game. Food, beer, red and blue jello shots, you name it, we had it. I was about 5 rows up in a corner of the lower Arena. That game was the loudest I have heard the Arena to this day. People talk about how loud it was for Notre Dame, but I'm convinced that game trumped all but a few ND or the Depaul 'The shot' game, or anything recent. After the '90 game, there was no looking back, knew who our rival was, and glad I was a part of something special.

I did not attend Bona's. My parents have been season ticket holders since 1971. I was at almost every home game and some away until I graduated from Allegany High. I went to SUNY Fredonia and SUNY Buffalo for my masters.

I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly of Bona Basketball. Love that university, like it was my own. Fr. Jim Vacco actually married my wife and I.

another dooley era spider here minus tarrant's last season. an era of bands like Dave Matthews (overrated imo but blasphemous thing to say in Richmond) and Hootie & Blowfish right b4 they got national playing regularly in the case of Dave at the epic since deceased Floodzone. agree it is a bit remarkable there are so many of us from Doooley era. the lowlight/highlight was the "you can't see Dick" Papparo no call on Mike Hodges in CAA tourney. Hodges was up in AC for A10 tourney this year btw. while I went to most games in college I think my fandom came on strong during beilein's great first season in 98 when I followed closely (which basically meant following scores on bottom line & going to richmond times dispatch online for most part since it was pre-message boards until I randomly stumbled upon rivals maybe a year later?). That year we won CAA tourney and beat South Carolina in 1st rd a game I attended. The fanaticism seems to only have incrementally increased every year since.

Yes & No

3rd generation Billikens fan. Attended my first game at 2 months of age. My father readily would plan vacations and weekend trips around Billiken road games as a child. From the age of 5 till I was 18 I missed only 2 home games. Have seen the Billikens call 5 different venues home & seen them play in 4 different conferences. Decided to go the state college route but never finished. Now at 32 taking online classes at SLU.

Earlier in this thread, I said that I support Xavier even though I went to college and grad school in New England (where I grew up) because I am on the faculty at Xavier, and have been for nearly thirty years. I also taught Snipe back when he was a pup.

Xavier 01, middle class with a full ride, but wouldn't have happened if my parents didn't shell out cash for a richie expensive high school.

I do think its much easier to get a merit scholarship with all the help that a good high school with great counselors, SAT tutoring, grade inflation, honors classes, etc provides.
