Biggest day so far with 6 games and 5 on national television including 4 on the ESPN family. UMass opens it up at 10 am on ESPN playing Harvard as 9.5 point favorites. Temple opens their season as 3.5 point favorites on the road taking on the Golden Flashes of Kent St. on ESPN at 12. Xavier is a 4 point underdog at home facing Butler in a non-conference game, interestingly Xavier opened as a 1 point favorite and even a 2.5 point favorite at BetUS before being bet down to a 4 point dog. VCU is a 7 point favorite at home as they face a tough Wichita St team at 7 pm on ESPNU. Richmond is a comfortable 15 point favorite taking on NC-Wilmington at 7 pm. Charlotte is an 11 point favorite at home taking on Georgia Southern at 9 pm on NBC Sports Network.

Butler is weak folks. They have no guards that can penetrate the paint. Will be a big problem in league play. Welcome to the A10 Butler, even a weakened X team is a lot bigger, faster and stronger.

I actually don't care if X wins this....a few Butler fans here are going to get a dose of reality today. Clarke looks like a poor mans Redford.

Yup. Xavier's athletes are simply suffocating Butler. Stevens is bringing a Horizon League roster into the A10. Said it all summer. They'll be competitive, but as Larry Johnson told Nolan Richardson way back when, Stevens needs to "get some men". Xavier is going over, around, and through them. First to nearly every spot. Where have you gone, Hayward, Mack and Howard?

I am still not sold on DK, other than his recruiting ability.

The talent Umass has should have been overwhelming to Harvard today. Also, their freshman guard outclassed Chaz. He played like a seasoned vet, while Chaz continues to look out of control most of the time. I wouldn't say most of the passes Chaz made that were bobbled or missed were the fault of the recipients. The PG shouldn't be shoving or forcing passes just because he ran out of room or got in trouble. A lot of the time I see Chaz dribbling around the court and then running up the middle into a crowd while everyone else watches. He obviously is an athletic and talented guy but if he cant start distributing as well as he scores I don't see Umass improving a lot over last year's result.

I think DK and Ron Everhart had a lot in common. They encouraged that fast paced game that relies on steals and transition points. They also don't really have a good plan that can be executed in a half court kind of game. Oh, and DK was able to get a lot more talent.

Just my thoughts. I really want to see Umass get back to the tournament and still think they have their best chance in 10 years to get there. I am just discouraged after that performance.

Stat sheet doesn't always tell the whole story. Of course he will have a lot of assists, he is the only one who handles the ball. Plus you can add all the times he got blocked for missed a layup to this turnover numbers. Chaz looks like the same guy he was last year and that didn't get Umass to the NCAA tourney. The pitiful non con schedule wont help this year either.

Whatever. Wasn't pretty but it was a win. If I remember correctly the 96 UMass Final Four team struggled to beat a perennially weak Duquesne team and it didn't hurt their season.

Thing that concerns me about butler is that it's pretty clear Roosevelt jones needs to be more involved on the perimeter. I had hoped he would work on his jumper and revamp his frame over the summer, but he looks out of shape and hasn't even looked at a jumper yet this game. Not good at all. He's a player that in his current state might really struggle with the a-10 transition.

Good win for Xavier. They started very fast and put up 23 points in 10 minutes. I'll have to look at the play by play, because it seemed like they shot 70% within the first 15 seconds of a possession. They struggled on longer possessions, but were dynamic in transition and off quickly set screens.

If Jeff Robinson has a Josh Duncan senior year, they can compete for a top 4 spot. Kid is playing extremely good basketball early on.

Brutal first half for VCU; they're fortunate to be down by just 4. No flow on the offensive end, a lot of jump shots, 5 for 12 from the line and Havoc did nothing for them. Nice 20 minutes for Wichita.

The first couple posts by some of the UD guys.. I felt like I was in the spin room after a political debate.

But then it became obvious after the spanking there wasn't much spinning that could be done. Maybe (just maybe) Xavier isn't entering the multi-year suck-factor/mediocrity patch that so many on here were predicting.
