Wasn't able to watch so I can't really comment much other than saying I am pissed they ruined my lock of the day pick.

What are the backgrounds of DK's assistants? Anyone with head coaching experience? DI, DII, DII? Anyone with a good in game coaching pedigree? If not maybe they need to be looking around for that.

:whatever:

Excited about pulling out the first one, happy to get this one but this is a team and these are individuals that are very frustrating to watch. Ups and downs are ridiculous.

OK Friars, now go out and win the rest of your games.

Wanted to post this again since I added it in an edit.

And yet ... they won.

I never draw conclusions from one game, especially early in the year. Yet UMass under Kellogg drives me crazy. Lack of discipline, quick shots, careless turnovers and periods of lethargy are all too common. The team has a lot of talent and UMass can beat just about any opponent when they are on their game - but they could also lose to just about anyone, too.

I admit, I am not crazy about this style of play. I never would have thought Kellogg would coach a team like that. He was the opposite of all the things I dislike about his teams when he was a player at UMass.

He also got thoroughly outcoached by Ed Cooley, who I really like. He did amazing stuff at Fairfield and he looks like he's going to do it at PC.

And yet ... they won. Again. At the last second.

Good teams find a way to win. UMass is good. I just don't know how good.

No kidding. DK as a player was over-disciplined and far too often passed up his shot (which was the best on the team). He really needs to get his shit together coachingwise. JHe is way too basketball smart to coach like this.

That's the thing I don't get about DK, 87. He knows the game. He was disciplined as a player. But he doesn't seem to have the knack of a great coach.

I saw Calipari his first two games at UMass. I KNEW we had something almost immediately, at a time when I knew so much less about basketball. I've gotten that same feeling over the years watching other terrific college coaches from afar as they started out.

I've never had that feeling about DK. He's done a bang-up job recruiting, but I still don't think he's anything more than a slightly above average coach.

I believe he has the chemistry part down as well - he can manage the personalities. At this point, it's an x and o thing. I met DK one when he was an undergraduate and I was a gradual student and, to be honest, he didn't wow me with his intellect. That said, the x's and o's aren't rocket science. He can learn that. He just needs to realize that he needs to. Frankly, I think Lou Roe can't get next to him soon enough.

Well... Huge sigh of relief. Between UMass' 2 buzzer beaters to start the season and Northeastern's 2 buzzer beaters to start the season, I'm not sure if I can take this anymore. But, a win's a win. I'm overjoyed. Huge win, because now we play #6 NC State. Win or lose, that's a game that we had to have the opportunity to play, as it is crucial to our SOS.

I'm much more pleased with this than the Harvard win. Providence played extremely well, and we still came away with the win. DK could've coached better, but the flack he is receiving from all of you is a little too much. I thought the refs called that game terribly in favor of Providence in the 2nd half. Players like Chaz and Cady got in foul trouble and they just kept calling tick-tack fouls that were simply tight, quality defense from UMass. The worst part is that these were all non-shooting fouls, but they just kept getting 2 shots. I'm not sure if they even made 3 field goals in the final 8 minutes, but they still had the lead almost the whole way. The game should not have been as close as it was, though we definitely could have played better.

Well, it's seems the magic is there with this team, and that's a great thing. If we play like we did the first half, we may just have a shot at upsetting NC State. If we play like we did in the 2nd half, it may turn out to be a "<<<<<<<" in our direction ;).

Z8's Record to Date: 23-6.

A win is a win regardless of how ugly it looked. I still think that Kellogg reminds me a great deal of Everhart on steroids. He recruits much better than Ron ever did, but he also lacks the game day coaching experience. Still, one could technically argue that he can coach in close game situations since he has pulled off two close wins.

That will be my first look at this team. Wish they were playing BU in Boston, I love that arena. Don't think I've ever been in NU's. (I need to check BU's schedule to see if they're hosting any other A10 schools)

So, I should be looking for the guy with the oversized foam Cowboys Hat that's causing a ruckus by cheering for and against both teams, and then move as far away as possible?

Watched that game. Providence guard Cotton is a very good player, and the other Friars available are quality, including the big man Batts who would start on every Atlantic 10 team.

Umass just can't shoot very well right now. Coaches look quite a bit better when their players make a few shots.

Overall, I'd say there is a little too much hand-wringing going on here about Umass, typically picked between 5-8 in the A10 on here, beating a decent Big East team - depleted or not. Also, Dayton, typically picked between 6-11 in the A10 on here, losing a good game to an NCAA quality team in Colorado.

I know we all have great expectations for the conference this year, but keep it in perspective. No one (with a brain) expects Umass to win the A10. I'm happy they grabbed a BCS scalp and will now play two good teams. Helps everyone.

What SHOULD have everyone's attention is SLU....that was alarming.

And don't pay any attention to Richmond....nothing to see here, move along.....

Immature.... WH summed it up nicely. I can see trying to put the hammer down whe you are up 8 or 10 and want to put them away, but they were firing up shots way to fast and from too far away. Granted, if they make 2 of the first 4, they probably run them out of the gym, but that didn't happen and they could have lost that one as easilly as they won it.

Not complaining - just observing.

Whatever heair that doesn't fall out will be very gray if the whole season plays out this way.

Hey, I'll buy you a beer, if they sell beer. (One reason I love BU. Okay, maybe the only one). I'll do my usual walk-up at the last minute so I have no idea where I'll be sitting. Mostly likely alone, and at least partly tanned, just back from a week in the Caymans. My wife will be working, while I go search for Mitt's money.

It's great that UMass pulled it out, that's all that matters in the short term - get the wins, get the SOS and RPI bump from playing NC State. Who knows, maybe those games will focus the team for a big effort and have NCSU take them a bit lightly.

Long term, however, it is disconcerting to see that UMass teams are still playing down to competition and looking ragged, even with a top-flight PG running the team. The change in offensive system and addition of Williams can account for the turnaround last season, but Kellogg really needs to be a better coach if UMass is to make any kinds of noise. He can't consistently get outclassed on the sidelines and expect to pull rabbits out of a hat in the final seconds. Won't happen against better teams. UMass has talent but the utilization of such remains a question mark, in my opinion.

I hope to see a really strong effort against NCSU. That game can make up for a lot of ATSF games.

Again, I don't see it as Kellogg being outclassed. Was Majerus outclassed last year when Umass kicked the shit out of St Louis? No, Umass shot well and St Louis did not.

I thought Umass played very solid defense for most of the game last night, and got a lot of very good shots that they missed.

Kellogg can get better, like most coaches. They should be strong this year and next, and I don't want to see the type of players they'll get with a couple NCAA appearances under their belt. Talent acquisition is a very large part of college coaching success. Even if he's not Norman Dale with the X's and O's, they'll get talent. And x's and o's can get better.

As far as Kellogg's intellect, that's a hard thing to judge, but I believe he was an academic all-conference player. Something Sean Carter couldn't get even with his 4.0 semester. Also, he deserves some kudos for building a team that doesn't give up and can make big plays when they have to. Also, I noticed last night that some of the players were doing stuff I thought had been lacking previously, which tells me that they had been coached up (Putney attacking the hoop more,Vinson posting up). So I think Kellogg gets something done in that department. I don't see that he's very good at making X/O adjustments during the games. Hopefully, that will come with more experience. In that department, also, we should probably really think of him as a second year head coach, because his first three years he was saddled with Vance Walberg and the dribble drive.
