Time to put the other thread to bed...turn to next season. Article in DDN today about building around Dillard next season. He's coming off a 13.3 and 6.0 season and looks to be the number #1 or #2 (Chaz Williams being the other) PG in the league next year.

http://www.daytondailynews.com/dayt...o-build-around-dillard-next-year-1345668.html

“Kevin Dillard, with a great offseason, will be able to hold his own against any guard in the country next year,” Miller said.

And the Flyers, who exceeded expectations by going 20-13 and reaching the postseason for the fifth straight year, likely will be able to surround him with an even better supporting cast.

Center Matt Kavanaugh, though limited defensively, had a breakout junior season. He averaged 9.0 points and 5.9 rebounds and was the only player in the league in the top 10 in field-goal percentage (54.6) and foul shooting (80.7).

Sophomore wing Devin Oliver averaged 9.6 points and 7.4 rebounds in a seven-game stint as a starter at the end of the season. And junior forward Josh Benson, who suffered a season-ending knee injury Dec. 30, averaged 10.9 points and 5.2 boards before being sidelined and is expected to make a full recovery.

“Vee to me is the most talented, gifted scorer on our team,” Miller said. “One of the things I look forward to is Vee making plays for others and himself where Kevin isn’t involved with every play. ... Both Matt and Vee both bring us an added dimension in scoring.

The Flyers finished 9-7 in the A-10 even without Benson, ending up in a tie for fifth. In six previous seasons, they produced a winning league record just once, and their average finish in that span was seventh.

“I thought our kids did an amazing job being coachable,” Miller said. “And I think we did have a really good year. It could have gone in a lot of different directions at different times.

“When we lost Josh ... that was a make-or-break deal for our team. I give them credit for their character level, and I thought our staff did a nice job to continue to morph our team in different ways to be successful.”

Great win for Dayton on the road. Year in and year out Alabama teams look similar, but always very hard to snag a win in Tuscalosa.

Love these OOC wins away against BCS type schools

BTW, Coleman Coliseum is a pit. Talk about bad facility. Sure its big, but old, and feels even older. Only plus is troughs in mens room, making for no lines even under sold out circumstances.

Otherwise I love Tuscalosa and all things Dreamland

Great win Flyers!

I don't know that there is anything positive about troughs in the men's room. Partitions are your friend. Minimizes unintentional collateral damage for both your pants and your eyeballs.

I really like Khari Price. He has limitations, but he already knows what they are. He lets the game come to him, and he can shoot the ball. As he progresses through the years he will become a better creator and scorer, but right now he fits the role perfectly.

Ha ha!!!!! Good one!

Honestly, I enjoy most of the Muddy posts. His "links" and stats add substance. I am mostly interested in Dayton, X and now Butler (because of their proximity to Dayton), so I am interested in most of what he posts. I love that other posters who are more interested in other schools have their own discussions about their respective teams and it's interesting to check in occassionally. I don't begrudge their activity or having to "read around it". It's a board for discussion of all A10 teams. I know there is going to be a lot that does not interest me all the time. It's easy to focus on the threads that do interest me.

Elivs thinks Muddy posting Vandebilt-Marist scores and links adds substance to the board. That's a unique perspective.

I trust you'd also be of the opinion if I posted links (multiple times) of Weber St and whoever the hell they lost to that earned them an RPI of #347 when they beat UD at home, that I would also be adding substance to the board.

Elivs, honestly I think you may be THE ONLY person that posts here that believes Muddy "adds substance" or that you are "interested in most of what he posts." You do understand "most" (and by that I mean 98%) of what he posts is about Xavier and is usually delusions, lies, misconceptions, outdated or totally irrelevant information. But the resident UD moderator, is interested in this, enjoys it and believes Muddy adds substance?? Haha

Not your older brother's Miami team. They come out chucking. I think they had fewer passes in the entire first half than Charlie Coles coached teams would have by the first TV timeout.

Devin Oliver is becoming a special player for Dayton. 15 points, 11 boards, 6 assists. That is some kind of stat line.

Very nice recognition for Dillard and UD. Team is starting to play better as a unit. Lots of talent on this team and the pieces look to be in place. Archie has the rotation to where he wants it with Alex and Derenbecker being the odd men out for now. Time will tell if everything falls into place.

Dayton missed NCAA tournaments because they underachieved in CONFERENCE games - teams they wouldn't be playing anymore.
In the last 5 years, Dayton has missed out on 2 NCAA Tournaments - likey due to season-ending injuries to key players.

Last season, the Flyers leading rebounder and best frontcourt player Josh Benson was lost for the season on December 30, 2011.

Here's a final look at the RPI Rankings and SOS Rankings before the Atlantic 10 Conference games begin tonight:

In early January 2008, forward Chris Wright was lost for the season with a broken ankle and forward Charles Little was lost for six weeks with a broken foot.

AP #14 Dayton to Host UMass on Wednesday at 7 PM (DaytonFlyers -January 15, 2008)

Little Out 4-6 Weeks With Broken Bone In His Foot (DaytonFlyers - January 18, 2008)

University of Dayton junior forward Charles Little has a fracture in one of the sesamoid bones in his right foot, it was announced today. The injury, which occurred during Wednesday's game with Massachusetts, does not require surgery and Little will be out four-to-six weeks.

Little is the second Flyer forward to be sidelined recently.

Freshman Chris Wright had surgery Monday to stabilize a fractured bone in his right ankle.

Dayton, 14-2 and 2-1 in the A-10, is ranked 14th in the latest Associated Press poll.

So yes, the Flyers underachieved, but it was due to the injuries of key players at the beginning of A10 conference play. These unlucky injuries quite likely kept the Flyers out of the 2008 and 2012 NCAA Tournaments.

You are a sad case, man. Hookers were an excuse, but the only time one of our players got one, we won the NIT championship game...at what point was this used as an excuse?

We haven't taken buses anywhere except probably Xavier, OSU or someplace close for like 10 years, what is that a reference to?

Our players actually got food poisoning from eating cheesesteaks, except the one player who traded his cheesesteak for one of his teammates' cookies (Paul Williams). Have you ever had food poisoning? Don't you think even your shitty job would be difficult if you had food poisoning?

You continue to mock me about "palpable pressure." Did you see us go on the road and smack Alabama? Played far looser, better and more aggressive than we had in the previous three home games? Archie Miller has since said that he felt like guys played nervous at home and better away from the arena. Do you think it is possible I had a point here? Not to mention, it was never presented as an "excuse," but as a criticism. But, whatever you need to do to make everything fit your reality.

Worst of all, you probably won't even attempt to respond to what I'm writing here. But you will continue to mockingly post about "palpable pressure."

While Muddy has legitimate points, we haven't had injuries every year. Our former coach was terrible against teams that were familiar with him. Bottom line. But Bill, is it ridiculous to say someone who scored 11 and 5 and was easily the best frontcourt player and defender was part of the reason we missed an at large? We were a Kav 3-footer away from beating X in the A10 tourney and very possibly getting an at large bid. We weren't that far off. I absolutely think losing Benson hurt. Your team beat us when we were missing Benson and Chris Johnson too.

I can actually understand what Cobra is saying, and can relate it to something Xavier fans would understand. Every year, Xavier players talk about the pressure of playing Dayton at home...no team wants to be the team that ends the streak. They are playing on their home floor, in front of a good home crowd but feel immensely more pressure then Dayton does.

I was at the Florida Atlantic game yesterday. It was very boring. Flyers did what they were supposed to do. Derenbecker got a feel good game under his belt, so that should help his confidence. Overall, it was a somewhat sloppy win against a bad team. I'm NOT criticizing at all. It was exactly what the Flyers needed to do against a bad team. Dillard had a great first half. It's the first time I've seen Khari Price and came away impressed. He will never be considered a top point guard in the league, but he plays hard and smart and he's not there to control the offense...just to facilitate it. I was most impressed by Oliver though. He really has turned into a smooth player. He doesn't force things and plays within the flow of the offense. He scores, rebounds and passes--all very well. I'm not sure which Flyer fan has the Oliver man crush going (Flyer75? Adam the Flyer?--too lazy to go back and check all the old posts to find out for sure)--but whomever it is...I get it. I really like the kid, too.

I believe you're right about Dayton owing Illinois State a return game next year.

Without a marquee non-conference win this season (and no future opportunities to get one), the Flyers really needed to win their home games against the Illinois State and Weber State to stay in the running for an NCAA Tournament 'at large' invitation:

Dayton Flyers Schedule and Results (Yahoo)

For the Flyers, two missed shots is the difference between a 10-1 record with an RPI Ranking in the high 20's, and their present 8-3 record with an RPI Ranking in the mid-90's.

Illinois State 74, Dayton 73 (Official Box Score)

Fast-break points: Illinois State 19, Dayton 10.

Weber State 62, Dayton 61 (Official Box Score)

Fast-break points: Weber State 11, Dayton 4.
In both of these upset losses, the Flyers gave up too many easy transition baskets, and that's why they are not 10-1 this morning.

What’s the matter with the Flyers? (Doug Harris, DDN - December 19, 2012 - 10:20 PM)

The Flyers are 8-3 with two losses by one point each at home, first to Weber State and now the Redbirds. Special seasons don’t happen unless someone steps up to make big-time plays in crunch time. And at least right now, the Flyers don’t have that guy.

The most disturbing aspect of the game was seeing Kevin Dillard limp off while clutching his lower back with just over four minutes to go. He walked up the tunnel with trainer Nate Seymour and never returned.

It’s too early to say whether he’ll be back for the Murray State game Saturday. But while the Flyers wouldn’t want to go into any game without their senior leader, Dillard has been as inconsistent this season as his team.

Dayton is always one of those programs that are young, looking to the future, one some bubble, just about to break out, ETC ETC.

The facts are the administration @ UD has NO clue how to run a div one basketball program.

These are the same morons that can't figure out an INTRO song.

Months turn into years and every season is a repeat.
Maybe next year.

The basketball program itself has never been a priority.
The priority is money--period.

I read where someone questioned the monies Marquette spent on their program.
The UD fan replied---where else could Dayton spend and invest in their program?

How about we start with PAYING a coach that has acutally had some head coaching experience.
Someone who isn't someones brother, son in law ETC.

Pay what is necessary to attract a great coach.
Believe me--money talks---you can get a worthy coach. But you have to pay him.

But the administration @ Dayton considers this a training ground for future ACC coaches. They treat this program like the minor leagues. And first year coaches without any experience are cheap. And isn't that whats important?

Tell me,do you think coach Majerus came to St Louis out of the kindness of his heart?---Did he coach their in hopes Georgia tech called with a job offer?

This is a program (Dayton) that was FORCED by the NCAA to invest money in video screens for their arena---forced to invest into their own program

Yet UD fans are confused that Butler, Gonzaga, X St Mary's VCU, and many more have past them by.

This is not by accident.

Soon the new conferenc will be named and there isn't a chance in hell that Dayton will be invited.

When that time comes the Administration @ Dayton will proclaim they have no answers as the why Dayton was left out.

They have no answers indeed.
