Time to put the other thread to bed...turn to next season. Article in DDN today about building around Dillard next season. He's coming off a 13.3 and 6.0 season and looks to be the number #1 or #2 (Chaz Williams being the other) PG in the league next year.

http://www.daytondailynews.com/dayt...o-build-around-dillard-next-year-1345668.html

“Kevin Dillard, with a great offseason, will be able to hold his own against any guard in the country next year,” Miller said.

And the Flyers, who exceeded expectations by going 20-13 and reaching the postseason for the fifth straight year, likely will be able to surround him with an even better supporting cast.

Center Matt Kavanaugh, though limited defensively, had a breakout junior season. He averaged 9.0 points and 5.9 rebounds and was the only player in the league in the top 10 in field-goal percentage (54.6) and foul shooting (80.7).

Sophomore wing Devin Oliver averaged 9.6 points and 7.4 rebounds in a seven-game stint as a starter at the end of the season. And junior forward Josh Benson, who suffered a season-ending knee injury Dec. 30, averaged 10.9 points and 5.2 boards before being sidelined and is expected to make a full recovery.

“Vee to me is the most talented, gifted scorer on our team,” Miller said. “One of the things I look forward to is Vee making plays for others and himself where Kevin isn’t involved with every play. ... Both Matt and Vee both bring us an added dimension in scoring.

The Flyers finished 9-7 in the A-10 even without Benson, ending up in a tie for fifth. In six previous seasons, they produced a winning league record just once, and their average finish in that span was seventh.

“I thought our kids did an amazing job being coachable,” Miller said. “And I think we did have a really good year. It could have gone in a lot of different directions at different times.

“When we lost Josh ... that was a make-or-break deal for our team. I give them credit for their character level, and I thought our staff did a nice job to continue to morph our team in different ways to be successful.”

Illinois State is a really good team. All credit goes to them for winning the game. Jackie Carmichael may be the best interior player Dayton will see all year.

The length and quickness of their guards really frustrated UD in their zone. They deflected numerous interior passes and closed out on shooters in an instant. Every one of their 4 on the outside of the zone can cover the space in their areas without needing the entire zone to shift. A well run zone is tough to beat. Few teams can pull it off, but ISU did last night.

Not having Dillard on the floor was the key to the final possession. Archie tried to let Sanford work, which was the absolute correct call, but the zone collapsed on him, stuck to Pierre, and he had no choice but to pass to Price. They ended up with two decent looks. Neither fell. That's basketball. An inch of difference on either shot and we're probably having another discussion today. It was a good game played by two quality teams. Should have another one on Saturday.

Tough loss. A missed opportunity. A win over Illinois State would have really helped the resume.

On UD's end, pretty encouraging performance by Gavrilovic, and Derenbecker had a second solid game in a row. Building a bench of more than just Robinson and Price will be key for A10 play.

Carmichael was extremely impressive. He was strong, athletic, and able to dribble and shoot from midrange. Their other big, who was taller, seemed kind of terrible and fouled out in very little playing time.

He's gone for 55 points and 20+ boards in his last two games. Has range and very very strong senior player.

But UD still should have won this game. Way too many turnovers, especially from Dillard. Missed FTs and I think Archie screwed up the last play simply by not having Derrenbecker in. Hell, it's the final play...you should have nothing but shooters and scorers in and one rebounder. Would have much rather had Matty Light shooting that last shot then Oliver.

Out of state and game wasn't on tv so I direct my question to those who saw it. I understand Dillard was out with a back issue, but down one in an end game situation why would you have Oliver taking a long jumper? I think you would want him near the boards. No-one capable of driving in the lane and probably drawing a foul?

Not saying Oliver taking the shot was the reason for the loss because there are numerous other things in the first 39:30 that had they been done better probably would've avoid what occurred. Nevertheless, given the situation, I find it surprising that an outside shot from Oliver was the best they could deliver.

#586 ·
Oliver shooting from the outside clearly wasn't the plan. Vee was supposed to drive to the basket, but he never made it past the three point line before getting cut off entirely. They were still in a zone, and spacing wasn't very good. So the two players who moved to intercept him didn't really open up much else.

I don't think Vee passed it immediately to Oliver (can't remember, memory is a little fuzzy). One more pass and it ended up with Oliver, and driving would have been risky time wise. To those who thought Derenbecker should have been in, yeah, probably true. I'd rather him taking a contested shot than those other guys. I would have been happy to take my chances on Benson even though he didn't have a good game.

Count me in on the Khari Price fan club. I'm curious to see what happens next season when UD has a surplus of guards, though. My guess is that he plays around 20 minutes a game, with the freshmen taking the other 20.

I have also been impressed by what I have seen in Khari Price, and it looks like we may be seeing a lot of him on Saturday:

UD's Dillard Out Indefinitely With Back Spasms (Doug Harris, DDN - December 20, 2012)

UD point guard Kevin Dillard may sit out a few games after back spasms forced him to leave the Flyers’ game vs. Illinois State on December 19th.

The Dayton Flyers called timeout to set up a final shot while trailing by a point against Illinois State on Wednesday, but the player who would have been their first option was in the trainer’s room getting treatment for a back injury.

Point guard Kevin Dillard stopped his dribble and grimaced in pain as he signaled to the bench for help with 4:19 left. He walked gingerly with trainer Nate Seymour up the ramp at UD Arena and never returned in the Flyers’ 74-73 loss.

The 6-foot, 180-pound senior, the team leader in scoring, assists and steals, didn’t practice Thursday and will rest his ailing back until being evaluated just before the Flyers take the court for warm-ups to face mighty Murray State on Saturday.

"He’s not feeling real well," UD coach Archie Miller said Thursday night. "I think it will be a long shot for him to play on Saturday. He’s dealing with a heavy dose of back spasms, and he has a hard time right now moving around."

"Anything from the back pretty much paralyzes you when it locks up. Your muscles go into spasm, and at that point, you can’t really move. It’s very, very painful. It’s going to take some time to address the situation."

Dillard looked to be hurt during a defensive possession before he asked out. But the injury could be from the multiple blows he’s taken this year with his fearless style of play.

"It’s probably more of a muscle thing or an alignment thing or taking some pounding," Miller said. "Any time you kind of get out of line, anything can spasm out on you. It could be a week. It could be two weeks. In the bigger picture, we don’t want anything to be lingering. We’re trying to be cautious right now."

Miller said freshman back-up Khari Price could have an expanded role, and shooting guard Vee Sanford also could slide to the point with small forwards Devin Oliver, Matt Derenbecker and Dyshawn Pierre moving to the 2 spot.

"We’ll go with who we have. We’ve done it all year when guys were down, and this is kind of another ***** in the armor. Obviously, it’s a big *****. But we go with who we have and hopefully we can be better at executing some of the things we need to execute," Miller said.

Best of luck to Kevin Dillard on a speedy and full recovery.

It appears that the Flyers will have only two scholarshipped guards available for tomorrow's game.

The Flyers catch a lot of flack from being a perenial NIT team and a team whose play degrades once the conference play begins. Some of the criticism is deserved, but there is also a bad luck element.

In 2007-2008 a Dayton Team with Brian Roberts and Chris Wright knocks off an eventual elite eight Louisville team on the road, beat a #6 ranked Pitt team, and then Chris Wright gets injured. The Flyers muddle through the conference, and finish with an RPI of 35 and just miss the NCAA tournament.

Last Year Josh Benson goes down, Dayton goes 9-7 in conference and Dayton ends up in the NIT.

This year, Kevin Dillard .....

#593 · (Edited)
If it's just spasms, Dillard will likely be back in full by the time A10 play starts.

From growing up playing sports all year, and now being an avid golfer, I get back spasms about once per year. It basically keeps you in bed for a day or two, and then really sucks for a week. Hopefully it's the same for Dillard, only he has first rate S&C people to work him through it and I stumble my way through basic stretches on my own. He could well be ready to go by the USC game. Great time for an 8 day gap between games.

I really like Khari Price, and I don't think Archie will put too much on his plate. I imagine Vee Sanford will guard Canaan tomorrow for the most part, with Oliver getting time on him as well. Hopefully Murray State doesn't respect Khari's shooting and he can knock down a couple of open threes. No one can replace what Dillard does, but there are ways to be productive without him. Will need Vee to have his best game thus far as a Flyer, I would think. He's been passive at times, he needs to be the man tomorrow.

That would be interesting to see. Price is a better on the ball defender than Dillard, I think, so I'd expect them to stick to man-to-man while he's in. Has Dayton played any zone this year? I don't think so, but I could be wrong. Considering how good Canaan is, I think our man-to-man options against him might be limited. Although I guess Oliver might be able to take care of him fairly well.

#596 ·
I don't think going zone against a team with an all-American point guard and several shooters is really what you want. I think the key is limiting Ed Daniel inside. Keep a body on him at all times and take away offensive rebounds. If Murray State is one and done all game, Dayton has a great chance to win.

#597 ·
#598 ·
Early in the second half of the Murray State game they had a two on one as Dillard couldn't get to the ball. Pierre trailed the play but appeared to stop when the Murray State player had a clear path to the basket. He missed the shot and the trailing MS player got the rebound and easy put-back. I believe Miller pulled Pierre, talked to him and sat him down. I don't remember him going back into the game. Did he ?

Geez - you would think all of that "success" would translate into an NCAA Tourney win or two (or at least an appearence)....

#602 ·
Yup I know exactly - but I also don't bring undue attention to it either....

#603 ·
You should be thankful for those wins, Knobby. All those out-of-conference wins, some of them marquee wins, have HELPED the A10. UD has won 81% of their OOC games over the last decade, more than all other conference members have contributed (and a lot more than some have). That HELPS the conference as a whole.

That UD has not had post-season success to match their OOC success is a UD problem, not a Knobby (or anyone else affiliated with the A10) problem.

#609 · (Edited)
You just being here shows that you care Knobby. You just being here all the time and sweating over what gets posted next on this thread shows that you really, really care. You won't see that type of concern over a floundering UMass.

Your obsession with the Flyers is the oddest love/hate affair on this board.

#610 ·
Flyer fans (Knobby feel free to chime in too),

How is everyone feeling about our A10 chances? Its been a bit of a roller coaster non-conference season, but I feel like we should be optimistic about the conference season for various reasons.

1. The league is good, not great. VCU and Butler look stout, and we have them in the first week of the season. If we come out 1-1, we should feel pretty good about that. After these two, there are a bunch of flawed teams: Temple, SLU, Mass, SJU, Richmond, LaSalle, Charlotte, Xavier. None of these guys are world-beaters. I expect LaSalle to be as good or better than any of them. I also expect Dayton to be as good as any of them.

2. The freshman: Price will continue to get better in his role as energy guard off the bench. Pierre is solid, and is ready for A10 play - he is just the type of multi-skilled guy who makes teams tough to guard in conference play. Robinson could really become a force. I think he learned a lot in the Murray game. If he continues to get better, we will hopefully have a big guy who can stand up to the good bigs in the league (Braswell, Riddic, Roberts?).

3. The other new guys: Sanford and Derenbecker are finally comfortable. Derenbecker is out of his slump and has felt the arena erupt after one of his threes - I expect him to be a sharpshooter the rest of the way. Sanford has never really played before, and it showed in early close games. It seems counterintuitive to think that 4th year junior needs "experience," but I think the experience he has gained in the first half of the season was invaluable. He was feeling that "palpable pressure" in UD arena for a while.

4. We got Dillard: Probably the main reason for optimism for me. I still think KD is the best guard in the league. He has had an inconsistent non-league season, but in fairness he has had to adjust to a whole new cast of teammates. When the lights are on, Dillard comes up big. I expect that to be the case throughout the conference season. Hopefully his back is fully recovered.

What do others think? Am I too optimistic? I think we will finish in the top 3 this year.

#611 ·
Yes. You are too optimistic. And you haven't learned your lesson that Flyer Pain(TM) is always lurking arounf the next corner.

My impression of the Archie Miller era thus far is that the team generally plays better on the road. However, the two teams have been wildly inconsistent - leading to more home losses. Last year featured a stomping of Temple in Philly and a home loss to Rhode Island.

So, until further notice, expect the Flyers to be 8-8 in the conference.

#612 ·
I certainly wouldn't predict top 3, but this team is capable of finishing that high. Then again, so are about 7 others. It's going to be a 16 game battle.

Dayton has many of the pieces you look for in a league contender. All-League, POY candidate point guard, a really good scoring SG, two solid SFs, and above average post play. They have athletes at every position and a developing bench. In league play there are no secrets, so things like rebounding become paramount. Dayton has two of the better rebounders in the league in Oliver and Robinson. Both are in the top 10 in def rebound % and Robinson is in the top 10 in off rebound % (Oliver is 18th).

It's a matter of putting the pieces together over 16 games. No question that has been a struggle for Dayton over the last 3 seasons. If it happens, they'll be near the top of the standings. If it doesn't, they'll probably be in the 5-7 range. I would be surprised if they came in worse than 7th.

Tourney Talk:

The only way I see us doing really well is if we get tougher in the middle. I originally thought we would be good inside, but the loss of Kavanaugh and the the slow start by Gavrilovic have us hurting in the paint. I think that Robinson has the talent to do some very good things for us, but that assumes that he develops a better feel for the game with his 1st half season experience.

This from CollegeChalkTalk:

"But how about Vee Sanford of Dayton? Sanford averaged just 2.4 points two years ago at Georgetown and is now the Flyers’ second leading scorer (12.7) behind Kevin Dillard. Sanford has been a 90% free throw shooter and has paired with Dillard to give Archie Miller’s club two potent scoring guards. Ranked as a top 30 guard in high school, Sanford’s ball handling abilities allow UD to run out a backcourt of two true point guards who can both score and distribute the ball. Thus far, it has paid dividends. Dayton is fourth in the league in both assists per game and three point shooting… and second in field goal percentage."

I really wish I could pull a Xavierhoops and find the Temple fan that stated more then once that Sanford was not even an A10 caliber player.

May be a little early since he hasn't actually played A10 teams yet, but he is off to a great start. I think he benefits as much as anyone from having Dillard as a running mate. That can only help him continue to put up some good numbers.

Remember when Kevin Dillard wanted to come to X but we didn't have the room? Would be nice to have him on this young, and tough-to-watch X team.

Well, in all fairness, at the time, X already had two terribly lucky tranin sfers sitting there in Crawford (who left that same year I believe) and Holloway who should have been at IU. Plus, you also had Lyons who was lucky enough to sit out his first year, giving you a lucky 5th year with him, which turned out to be an unlucky year for you at AZ. You're unluck, was our luck.
