Time to put the other thread to bed...turn to next season. Article in DDN today about building around Dillard next season. He's coming off a 13.3 and 6.0 season and looks to be the number #1 or #2 (Chaz Williams being the other) PG in the league next year.

http://www.daytondailynews.com/dayt...o-build-around-dillard-next-year-1345668.html

“Kevin Dillard, with a great offseason, will be able to hold his own against any guard in the country next year,” Miller said.

And the Flyers, who exceeded expectations by going 20-13 and reaching the postseason for the fifth straight year, likely will be able to surround him with an even better supporting cast.

Center Matt Kavanaugh, though limited defensively, had a breakout junior season. He averaged 9.0 points and 5.9 rebounds and was the only player in the league in the top 10 in field-goal percentage (54.6) and foul shooting (80.7).

Sophomore wing Devin Oliver averaged 9.6 points and 7.4 rebounds in a seven-game stint as a starter at the end of the season. And junior forward Josh Benson, who suffered a season-ending knee injury Dec. 30, averaged 10.9 points and 5.2 boards before being sidelined and is expected to make a full recovery.

“Vee to me is the most talented, gifted scorer on our team,” Miller said. “One of the things I look forward to is Vee making plays for others and himself where Kevin isn’t involved with every play. ... Both Matt and Vee both bring us an added dimension in scoring.

The Flyers finished 9-7 in the A-10 even without Benson, ending up in a tie for fifth. In six previous seasons, they produced a winning league record just once, and their average finish in that span was seventh.

“I thought our kids did an amazing job being coachable,” Miller said. “And I think we did have a really good year. It could have gone in a lot of different directions at different times.

“When we lost Josh ... that was a make-or-break deal for our team. I give them credit for their character level, and I thought our staff did a nice job to continue to morph our team in different ways to be successful.”

The Cobra mentions the travel across the lane on offense. Another weakness of Benson's game which hasn't been mentioned is the charge-flop. He does that at least twice per game and it usually is called a block. Such a move is not becoming of a big man and often amounts to him getting a cheap foul or two called on him early in the game. It's one thing if Price does it, but it is aggravating when a 6'10 man does it.

Could not agree more, John. Why are you trying to draw a charge on someone who is quicker than you but 6 inches shorter? That is not playing to your strengths.

Another thing that bothers me about Benson's D is that he never battles for position before the ball arrives. As a weaker big man, he needs to do his work early and make guys work to put their foot on the block, because once they do, you are toast. Even I do this in pickup games! But he seems to just stand behind guys and let them catch it on the block. Obviously, Jerell Wright was able to do this and had great results.

He isn't rebounding, he isn't defending, and he is turning the ball over. I say give the younger guys more minutes, and not for development's sake. For this year's team's sake. Who knows, maybe getting benched will light a fire under him.

I actually wonder if Benson and the team wouldn't be better served if he came of the bench? In part, he hopefully gets to observe whats going on, bring some energy (hopefully positive) when he enters, and plays against the other teams' subs. I don't know if he is hurting, doesn't have confidence in his recovery or the injuries have taken away some of his athletic ability. Maybe some success off the bench would be a boost for him.

Kevin Dillard went 5-for-6 on 3-pointers, Derenbecker 3-for-4, Sanford 4-for-6, and Khari Price 2-for-2.
Next season, Kevin Dillard will be getting paid to play basketball.

Vee Sanford will be a senior, Matt Derenbecker and Jordan Sibert (who is reportedly shooting 3's well in practice) will be juniors, Dyshawn Pierre and Khari Price will be sophomores, while Dayshon Smith and Kyle Davis will be freshmen.

BTW, former flyer Juwan Staten has not yet made any 3-point shots for Bob Huggins.

. . . but he still thinks he will be playing in the league in a couple of years. Good luck with that, Juwan.

More good news for the Flyer Faithful:

Dayton’s Rebounding Margin edge over Xavier may be even bigger than it appears:

Dayton’s Opponents to Date:

Code:
[b] 3. Fordham +7.0
 4. Butler +6.2
 8. VCU +1.0

12. La Salle -3.8[/b]

Xavier’s Opponents to Date:

Code:

12. La Salle -3.8
14. Temple -5.0
15. St. Bonaventure -7.8[/b]

Dayton has already played Fordham and Butler, while Xavier has run up their tally against the likes of La Salle, Temple, and St. Bonaventure without facing any of the Top 4 Rebounding Margin teams.

So Muddy goes away and there is good discussion in this thread, including Xavier fans. Muddy returns with harmless posts that can not possibly be seen as inciteful (rare for him), and Xavier fans return to mock him while derailing the quality discussion that has been taking place.

But yeah, let's keep pretending Muddy is the only issue on the board. Perhaps Manti Te'o believes it.

#671 ·
Even Ray Charles could see the point Adam was making, and one that he's spot on. Now I have no idea what Muddy is doing elsewhere on X threads, I rarely look at those, but I think it shows what good moderation could do for this board. There was nothing in his 3 point thread that attacked anyone w/n the A-10 (only Juwaan Staten could have been offended by that) yet X fans pop out and feel the need to take a swipe at UD and/or Muddy.

I think the point stands, the issues with this board do not soley sit in Muddy's corner, there's plenty of blame to go around.

So, Muddy is gone for weeks and it is agreed the discussion here is pretty good. He comes back for one day, discussion is "derailed." Yet, the issues don't sit solely in Muddy's corner. Gotcha.

Also, I don't know of any X fans that took swipes at UD in this thread?

Last night's shooting had me curious, so I looked at some stats. Dayton essentially has 4 guys shooting better than 40% from 3, and 5 over 36%.

Pierre - 48.6%
Derenbecker - 44.6%
Price - 42.4%
Dillard - 39.8%
Sanford - 36.8%

39.2% as a team from 3. 46% overall. They can put the ball in the basket. Fix the turnover issue and they can do some really good things on offense. The defense is what it is, but to me, this is a team capable of simply outscoring most teams they play. Just have to have possessions end in shots.

#685 ·
I'm not Adam, but yes, it is. Muddy we can talk about 3 point field goal percentage and rebounding margin all we want, but these guys are right that its the standings that matter. And, as of now, we are toward the bottom.

But, I fully expect that to change. If my other posts haven't shown it, I am optimistic about this team. I think Dayton is one of the most talented teams in the league, and are starting to put it together. They ran into a buzzsaw at VCU, played poor defense against a Butler team that shot the lights out (Andrew Smith with a dagger 3), and inflicted themselves against LaSalle. But teams are going to lose games this year in league play. The winner will probably have 3 losses.

UD could possibly tie X in the loss column by winning next Wednesday's showdown. Of course, that won't happen. But anyway, while it seems like we are far behind, we aren't that far behind. And we are only going to get better.

As far as Muddy's point about our 3pt shooting, I am suprised that a lot of our new additions turned out to be very competent 3pt shooters. I'm most suprised by Pierre. He can really shoot the ball.

I, however, thought we would be strong inside, and that could not be further from the truth. I have hopes that more time from Scott can help remedy that, but I'm disappointed in our inside game. I also think our defense could use a complete overhaul.

I'm actually more surprised about about Price's strong three point shooting. He shoots with amazing confidence.
