NEWPORT, Maine — Chris Braley, the former first-team All-Maine basketball star from Nokomis Regional High School who has spent the last two years at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, N.H., has made a verbal commitment to continue his playing career at Division I Stony Brook (N.Y.) University beginning this fall, according to his father.
Braley, a 6-foot-4-inch guard-forward, made his decision to accept an athletic scholarship from the Long Island-based America East Conference school Wednesday night, Scott Braley said via email early Thursday afternoon.
Chris Braley subsequently confirmed his choice on his Twitter account.
Braley averaged 25.5 points and 12.7 rebounds as a junior in leading Nokomis to an Eastern Maine Class B tournament berth in 2011, and he subsequently was named first-team All-Maine by the Bangor Daily News.
He then opted to transfer to prep school, reclassifying as a high school junior to attend Phillips Exeter for two more years as an undergraduate.
This winter Braley is a co-captain of the Phillips Exeter basketball team and one of the leading scorers for coach Jay Tilton’s Big Red, who currently sport a 17-1 record as a member of the New England Preparatory School Athletic Conference.
Braley also played last summer for the Massachusetts-based Middlesex Magic AAU basketball team.
Braley had drawn interest from numerous Division I mid-major programs. His most recent offers had come from Stony Brook, Maine, Hofstra, James Madison and Albany, along with continued interest from the likes of Quinnipiac, Duquesne and Wofford.
Braley made his official visit to Stony Brook on Jan. 26-27, the same weekend the Seawolves hosted Maine in a conference game. Stony Brook defeated the Black Bears 79-69 on Jan. 26.
Stony Brook, coached by Steve Pikiell, is 17-5 overall this winter and leads the America East standings with an 8-1 conference record.
Braley is expected to formalize his acceptance of an athletic scholarship from Stony Brook when the National Letter of Intent spring signing period for men’s basketball begins April 17.
