VCU Rams not only selling out home games,
but providing league ticket boost as well

After crunching all the numbers, VCU and Atlantic 10 fans have to be pleased with VCU’s appeal, as the Rams have been a huge boost to opposing team’s home attendance averages thus far, bringing in 69% more fans to those A-10 games than those teams have averaged during their 2012-13 seasons thus far.

Here are the complete results:

VCU A-10 away attendance versus team home average
@ St. Bonaventure 4,675 v 4,056
@ Duquesne 6,278 v 3,559
@ Richmond 9,071 v 5,181
@ Rhode Island 6,632 v 4,071
@ Charlotte 8,794 v 6,222
Total 39,009 v 23,089 = +69%

ANONYMOUS NO MORE; RAM HEADS AID VCU

You’ve probably never heard of the Ram Heads, VCU Women’s Basketball’s male practice squad. That’s because they operate only behind the closed doors of the practice gym. But recently, Scott Wyant dropped by practice to find out how this group of unknowns is making an impression on Marlene Stollings’ VCU program.

St. Valentine's Day UMassacre !!!

Ram fans waited almost two full weeks to see VCU run the court at The Siegel Center. After getting a win in Charlotte last Saturday, the Rams looked to make it their fourth straight victory as they would play the University of Massachusetts for the first time ever.

The Minutemen gave VCU fits in the first half but the Rams were able to dominate UMass from the start of the second half to get the 86-68 win.

After handling UMass in the second half to get their 4th straight win on Thursday, The Rams were looking to make it five straight as they hosted George Washington University Saturday night. This also marked the fourth time the two teams have matched up, VCU owning all the wins in the series, this game would be no different as the Rams collected their fifth straight win (18 for their last 20), 84-57.

THUNDER TRADE ERIC TO 'BLAZERS

Eric Maynor will now officially call the same venue VCU won their last NCAA tournament game, Rose Garden Arena, his home office, as the Oklahoma City Thunder traded the VCU legend to the Portland Trailblazers before the end of today’s NBA trade deadline.

Maynor dropped to third on the depth chart behind both Russell Westbrook and Reggie Jackson in OKC, and will now serve as the primary backup to Portland rookie star Damian Lillard.

The early returns from tonight’s game at Xavier suggested another rough night for the Rams. But after a 4-0 run to start the second half, stretching Xavier’s 13-point halftime lead to a massive 17-point deficit, VCU started fighting back.

The win was a crucial road victory for the Rams, not only giving the black-and-gold a RPI top-100 road win for their tournament resume, but also moving them to two games ahead of the fifth-placed team with just three games remaining.

The top four seeds in the Atlantic 10 get a first-round tournament bye.

The Rams move to 10-3 in A-10 play, 22-6 overall on the season.

VCU will take a week off before taking on the No.15 Butler Bulldogs in a Final 4 rematch next Saturday at noon at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.

Video: Shakaville hits the Siegel Center

Tomorrow’s game is a pretty big deal.

VCU will take on No.20 Butler in a nationally televised ESPN2 contest that pits the two 2011 Final 4 participants in a bit of a rematch of the two up-and-coming programs.

Tickets have been sold out for a long time and are going for as much as $400 (and climbing) online.

Student tickets were given out early, but that hasn’t stopped some Ram fans for making sure they don’t just get in, but get the best seats in the house.

VCU fan, Brandon Alness, started the line YESTERDAY, as in two days before the game, and “Shakaville” has officially sprung up at the Siegel Center. A number of Ram fans have been camping out at the front of the line for tomorrow’s matchup, and more are expected to arrive this evening for tomorrow’s noon tip.

VCU get revenge on Butler,
Silence the Bulldogs 84-52

The Rams welcomed Butler to their first-ever trip to the Siegel Center, then proceeded to throttle them from start to finish, forcing 23 turnovers while hitting 43.5% of their threes in the 84-52 nationally televised rout.

VCU held star guard Rotnie Clarke, the A-10′s fourth leading scorer (17ppg), to just five points off 2-of-8 shooting on the evening.

VCU Wins Naismith Student Section of the Year Award

Atlanta, Ga., (March 6, 2013) – As the 2013 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship® approaches, VCU has already earned one national title this season. The Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC), an affiliate of IMG College, and the Atlanta Tipoff Club today announced Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) as the winner of the second annual Naismith Student Section of the Year Award.

A total of 158 schools representing 25 conferences submitted entries for the award, which was launched nationally on Jan. 17. The VCU basketball student section was selected after two rounds of public Facebook votes, combined with a scoring of finalists by the Naismith Awards Board of Selectors. Selection criteria for the top eight finalists included the student section's name and attendance, photos, video, a write-up submitted by the nominating school, a weighted score based on the public vote. VCU led the way into the final round of scoring with the highest vote tally throughout the first and second rounds of the public vote.

The Rowdy Rams outlasted the remaining candidates including Gonzaga, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Pitt, Purdue, and Saint Bonaventure, the Board of Selectors said, noting the 2,000-seat student section's unique traditions, including a the Rowdy Rams student section membership, screaming for the black and gold alert, the "Let's Go VCU" chant, and students waiting in line all day prior to tip-off.

VCU’s late push helps knock off the Spiders, 93-82

Tonight marked the final time Ram Nation would get to see Seniors Darius Theus, Troy Daniels and David Hinton suit up at home as they hosted cross town rival, Richmond. After suffering an exhausting overtime loss about 5 weeks ago, at Richmond, VCU looked to build their momentum after getting a statement win against Butler on Saturday.

This night may have been for the Seniors but it was Sophomore Treveon Graham who would lead the team in scoring with 21 points. He would help lead a final 6-0 run with under two minutes that would solidify a Rams win, 93-82.

‘Havoc’ rides large in the Big Apple

MANHATTAN, NY (WTVR) – Virginia Commonwealth University fans start arriving in Brooklyn for the Atlantic-10 basketball tournament this week, but New Yorkers have already seen “havoc” on the streets of Manhattan.

Bill Schwartz, a VCU graduate, is the CEO of Vector Media. He and several other alumni in New York City have paid to have three double decker tour buses wrapped in VCU colors while driving around the city.

Action photos from recent games and hashtags like #Havoc adorn the buses.

“VCU is havoc and we’re going do our best to help as that sixth player to spread havoc around New York City,” said Schwartz.

Each of the past three postseasons for VCU, Schwartz’s group has wrapped one tour bus, but this year, since the Atlantic 10 basketball tournament is in Brooklyn, New York, the group wanted to go big.

VCU, THETA DELTA CHI, LUMBER LIQUIDATORS PARTNER
TO HELP KIDS TO TOURNEY

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Havoc is heading to the Big Apple this weekend and thanks to a great partnership with Lumber Liquidators and VCU's chapter of Theta Delta Chi, the VCU Athletic Department is giving 100 children from the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club an "Atlantic 10 Tournament Gameday Experience."

Through the partnerships, these children will receive tickets, food and much more to Saturday night's Atlantic 10 Conference semifinal session at the prestigious Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

"Part of our quest for distinction is community engagement and that community is not limited to the Richmond area. We're such a diverse university and athletic department and we want to continue to engage the VCU brand across the country and world with opportunities like this one," Director of Athletics Ed McLaughlin said. "Through tremendous support from our corporate sponsors like Lumber Liquidators, we're able to continue supplying these unforgettable experiences for children all over the country."
