If we could eliminate disabilities from the population, should we?

Hap gave me the idea of starting a controversial poll. I hope this one gets some good discussion. I first posted this question on some newsgroups years ago for a biology report. Please explain your answer as best you can. After you are done with my forum, go vote on Hap's poll!

By ridding disabilities from the population, do you mean curing all disabled people of their disabilities?

That is an interesting question.

I think that it would have to be up to the people with the disabilities to decide for them selves.

As in killing them off? No, that's barbaric. I speak as someone, who feels at one time or another, I will probably be suffering from some physical ailment, even though I am extremely healthy, I can feel these things.

If disabilities can be identified in the developing fetus and fixed prior to birth, as medicine may be able to do in the not-too-distant future, I am entirely for that. Why should someone go through life with a handicap, if it is preventable?

If this poll is asking whether disabled people should be killed, prior to birth or after birth, I'd certainly be against that. I'm sure those with disabilities would tell you that they live perfectly fulfilled lives even with a handicap...it would be outrageous to take that away.

What's a disability?

Who gets to define it?

But most of all I wish that I was someone else but me.

Now I don't have a coat of silk, but I still have the sky
Now I don't have a lady, but there goes a butterfly
Now I don't have a house of stone, but I can see the sea
Now most of all I know that I am happy to be me.
I'm happy to be me.

I'd like to say I made this, but I didn't

You mean get rid of them by killing people or not allowing people to have kids or somethin like that or just magically make them all go away???

If the latter, absolutely.

I don't mind people picking any of the four options as long as they explain their point of view.
