I haven't played chess much lately, but I played a lot as a child. National champion for 3rd grade, 3 time California scholastic champion (high school champion when I was 15) and California Expert champion. I never studied, so my path was definitely a downward one, with the peak at age 5. I was rated 1336 then, #1 for my age except for some abuser in Las Vegas, and people thought I would follow in Jordy Mont-Reynaud and Vinay Bhat's footsteps in being a Bay Area player to set the record for youngest US Master (well, at least there was one guy who was quoted in an article as saying that).
Unfortunately, my progress from that point was very slow, and I didn't break 1500 until age 8. Something finally clicked at age 10, and I shot up. Still, when I was 10, which was when Jordy and Vinay became masters, I was only 1980 French rating, since I lived there at the time. In France at ages 10-11, I played on the Le Rouret city team for both scholastic (board 1 in division 1) and adult (board 2 in Division 4). When I returned to the US at age 11, I stopped playing at all seriously, only a couple of tournaments a year. One nice thing about being underrated in the US was that I won $3112 in the North American Open A section. I did play a lot of bullet and some blitz on the Internet Chess Club, however. The only thing that got me back into it a little was playing on my high school team, slthough it wasn't against very strong competition mostly. When I was in 11th grade, we went to the High School State Championship and, though out of practice, I managed to win, and our team took 1st as well, the other three boards only being about 1600-1700. Somewhat inspired, I went with a couple of my teammates to the Calchess state (class) championships and managed to win the expert section.
That's been my last tournament however, and my US rating ended at about 2050, since I hadn't played enough to catch up from all the progress I made in France and since then. I feel I am/was about 2200 strength (2256 performance rating in my last tournament, for whatever a 6 game sample dize is worth). Even my ICC account has been expired for about 6 months, and I didn't play really at all on it for a year or so before. Actually, all of the Bay Area prodigies have quit. Vinay, who was also at Berkeley and made 2550, stopped for a while, had a briefly unsucesseful comeback and hasn't been back. Jordy never really got any better after setting the record at age 10, and has barely played since 13 or 14.
"Indian strategy" doesn't really mean anything, but maybe you are referring to various openings black can play against 1. d4. The King's Indian is one of the most popular black queen-pawn openings, being very dynamic and giving black attacking chances, and there is also the Queen's Indian, the Nimzo-Indian and the Bogo-Indian.
Didn't realize there were any other chessplayers on BBB.net. Though I don't know if I can really call myself one at this point. I had not really played at all before high school, then I got into it for a couple of years and got up to around 1350 playing in a few local tournaments. Haven't really played much but random blitz games since though. Probably forgot how to play an actual long game.
Good to see other people who play, at any rate.

Yeah, my USCF rating stopped somewhere absurd, like in the 1200s, but I like to play and tried to study the book. I don't see all the angles, by any means, but I can hold my own sometimes with the guys that used to play in Rittenhouse Square in Philly. Those guys rate anywhere between 1400-1950.
But I don't play competitively. I only have two or three real openings on White (all out of the Queen's Gambit, although I can open out of e4 and play it by ear) and only two defenses (both Sicilian, one being the Sicilian closed nc3, one being the Najdorf). Usually I try to fianchetto the bishop and then play the center. And then lose.
My style is to play off the center, but unlike most good chess players, my mind is not on trying to shape the end game but rather just to be amateurish and overaggressive, regardless of my position. I guess the fun in playing chess for me is those cool, unconventional, exclamation mark moves in the middle game. Attrition, though it's the right and patient way to play, has never been in my game. Thus, my low rating.
I'm up for a game against anyone who wants one. No one has visited this thread for months now, but maybe someone will at some point.

I don't check this forum often enough. Bobby Fischer, where to start? What do you want to know about him?

Yes, he was a prodigy. He became a grandmaster at 15, he youngest ever at the time. Here is an incredible game he won against one of the top 10 players in the USA at the time with a queen sacrifice...
He had the highest chess rating ever until Garry Kasparov came along. He crushed several of the best players in the world six games to none on his way to the World Championship match with Boris Spassky and then beat the previous champion, a hard man to beat, quite easily. He claimed he only believed in good moves and not physcology, but he really got into Spaasky's head by complaining about everything, the lighting, the chairs, the room, etc. He even went so far as to, after losing the first game against Spassky in the World Championship due to a miscalculation of his attempt to save his bishop, not show up for the second game and forfeit it. He still won the match by four games, helped by shocking Spassky by playing an opening he had never played before.
After winning the championship, he complained some more when a match to defend his title was being negotiated and as a result forfeited the championship, he still considers himself champion though and the US House of Representatives passed a resolution declaring him still champion. After that, he didn't play serious chess until a rematch with Spassky in 1992, 20 years after the first match. He won that one too. He broke an Exectutive Order by playing in Yugoslavia though.

Order to Provide Information and Cease and Desist Activities
FAC No. 129405
Dear Mr. Fischer:
It has come to our attention that you are planning to play a chess match for a cash prize in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) (hereinafter "Yugoslavia") against Boris Spassky on or about September 1, 1992. As a U.S. citizen, you are subject to the prohibitions under Executive Order 12810, dated June 5, 1992, imposing sanctions against Serbia and Montenegro. The United States Department of the Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control ("FAC"), is charged with enforcement of the Executive Order.
The Executive Order prohibits U.S. persons from performing any contract in support of a commercial project in Yugoslavia, as well as from exporting services to Yugoslavia. The purpose of this letter is to inform you that the performance of your agreement with a corporate sponsor in Yugoslavia to play chess is deemed to be in support of that sponsor's commercial activity. Any transactions engaged in for this purpose are outside the scope of General License No. 6, which authorizes only transactions to travel, not to business or commercial activities. In addition, we consider your presence in Yugoslavia for this purpose to be an exportation of services to Yugoslavia in the sense that the Yugoslav sponsor is benefiting from the use of your name and reputation.
Violations of the Executive Order are punishable by civil penalties not to exceed $10,000 per violation, and by criminal penalties not to exceed $250,000 per individual, 10 years in prison, or both. You are hereby directed to refrain from engaging in any of the activities described above. You are further requested to file a report with this office with 10 business days of your receipt of this letter, outlining the facts and circumstances surrounding any and all transactions relating to your scheduled chess match in Yugoslavia against Boris Spassky. The report should be addressed to: The U.S. Department of the Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control, Enforcement Division, 1500 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Annex - 2nd floor, Washington D.C. 20220. He didn't respond well to the letter and as a result, is no longer welcome in the USA. He was arrested in Japan in 2004, but I'm not sure what came of it.
He has some crazy ideas. He hates women and Jews (his mother was a Jew). Here are some recent interviews on some other subjects.

did he ever coach/mentor anyone?
