Thunder Mystery: No One Will Say Why Earl Watson Benched
Quote:
Earl Watson received word of his benching on Saturday, March 14, just before the Thunder took the court against the Phoenix Suns and one game after delivering his best performance of the season.
Nearly two weeks later, the Thunder point guard still isn’t sure how he’s bounced from opening night starter to backup to bench warmer.
"Literally walking onto the court to warm up, I found out I wasn’t going to play,” Waston remembered. "Then I found out I was going to be out for a while. No one said how long.”
Tuesday’s 107-89 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers marked the sixth straight game Watson didn’t play. Thunder coach Scott Brooks insists the demotion is not personal. Watson seconded that stance, saying there is no rift between player and coach and that no behind-closed-doors altercation or incident of any kind led to the change.
"I wanted to give Chucky (Atkins) a chance to see what he has and see what kind of mix he will bring to our team,” said Brooks on Wednesday, staying consistent with his stance since making the change. "We’ve done some good things with him on the court.”
Well, OKC should've at least tried to trade him in the Wilcox-for-Malik Rose mode. There are teams that could've paid them to take their scrubs for Watson (Miami and Sacramento) while clearing one or two millions in their cap.

It's not a mystery. Watson is a career journeyman, and it's only a matter of time before he wears out his welcome with each regime. He's not dependable, he's not efficient, and there are better options at his position.

After getting rid of Watson and Atkins, I'm a little surprised that the Thunder didn't make a run for Ramon Sessions. He'd be a great 3rd guard off the bench for this team and could likely be signed for a deal in the $5m range.

They're trying to keep flexibility, have other needs to fill in the future, and with Westbrook it doesn't make sense to go after him. Especially, with Sessions being a RFA anyway and is seeking full MLE and a starting job.
Lebron is such a joke. He saw how much everyone loved Dwight and Nate's routine in the dunk contest and had to horn in on it and announce 364 days early how he would participate and get the spotlight on him. Then he wips it all up in a frenzy and backs out like a chump. I've been getting tired of LeBron's junk for a while now. This is just another reason to see this guy as a chump. Great ballplayer, insane talent, total chick.

Watson is a quality backup, emergancy starter type player. I like him. Good passer, inconsistent player.
